What's up in our classroom

Week of February 15th

Reading and Writing

Reading--We are doing all kinds of reading: buddy/self, fiction/informational text, book/magazine, test passages/test taking. We also have joined Google Classroom and have assignments through Newsela, an online news site that presents current reading topics on many different reading levels.

Writing--We are all in different places in the writing process for our persuasive letters to support the Save Brushy Creek Trail campaign. We'll be sending our letters out soon.

I also encourage you to visit the website and write a letter of your own.

Our last piece of persuasive study will be in the form of persuasion in media.

Reading Packet-- This week's packet has a passage and ten comprehension questions. Students should prove their answers with text evidence when possible (underlining/highlighting and noting the question number). Effort grades do count for this homework. Here is a link to the packet.

**I am sorry that last week's link didn't work. This link should. If you ever come across a broken link or a page where permissions are not allowed, please let me know so that I can make changes!

Vocabulary--This week our study is port meaning to carry. Portable recurred on this list, so we revisited the suffix -able. Here is a link to the vocabulary slide show.

Supplies Request

We have reached that time of year when our original supplies are dwindling and need replenishing. Please check in with your child to see how they are doing on pencils, colored pencils, markers and scissors. A new set of supplies can be a nice new year treat! (Okay, it's February--a nice Chinese New Year treat!)

Henry Middle School Visit

Leander ISD likes to ensure that students have a smooth transition from elementary school to middle school. Cox students are zoned for Henry Middle School.

On 3/4/16, all Cox 5th graders will visit Henry Middle School. The students will tour the school, see various Fine Arts performances, learn about middle school classes, fill out choice sheets for electives and eat lunch. Students can bring their lunch or purchase lunch at Henry Middle School using their student IDs.

The choice sheet must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the student's 5th grade teacher the following Monday. Students will be chaperoned and bus transportation will be provided.

Please click on the below link to sign a parental acknowledgement form to allow your student to ride the bus to HMS on 3/4/16 for middle school visits.
