GREAT JOB MRS. SLOMINSKI
Hemlock Public School District is committed to their mission and vision to innovate, collaborate, educate a community of learners. Recently, the district released an internal proposal for the instructional staff to pitch ideas that would improve instruction and remote learning due to the changing landscape of education in this new era of handling COVID-19 and a world-wide health crisis/pandemic.
Middle School 5th grade teacher Lisa Slominski submitted a proposal to enhance face-to-face instruction and remote learning. She will be piloting a tablet that will connect to our classroom projection system, allowing her to use her whiteboard from anywhere in the classroom.
Superintendent Don Killingbeck said, “I am very pleased that Mrs. Slominski demonstrates the forward-thinking that we need in our educators today. Her proposal was thought-provoking and made good sense to support.”
Middle School Principal Chase shared, “This is just another example of how Hemlock Public School District supports innovation and moving programs ahead.”
The Lumberjack Holiday Craft show is going to continue to go on this year! With recent events that have happened this year, we had to move our event outdoors to comply with the governors orders, and we have moved up our event 1 month earlier to Saturday Oct. 17th 2020 at Richland Twp Park.
Since Sawdust Days had to be postponed until 2021, we need to raise funds for our scholarship and community donations. All proceeds from this event will go directly towards the scholarship and community fund where we give back to others. We will also have a silent auction in the barn and we are asking for anyone who is willing to donate any items, we would gladly appreciate it! Send us a message to let us know!
Interested in becoming a vendor? Please go to our website at: https://www.hemlocksawdustdays.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Lumberjack-Holiday-Bazzar-Vendor-Application-1.pdf Vendor spots are limited, so it will be first come first serve.

HEAD OUT TO GET YOUR PUMPKINS
A fun filled rite of the Fall season is going out and picking pumpkins. Whether you go out to a field filled with pumpkins, or get them from a roadside stand, you want to get the absolutely best pumpkin for carving, decorating and eating! Pumpkins are called "long keepers". So this means if you pick a healthy, uncarved Pumpkin right now, it can last to Thanksgiving and beyond.
There is not a "perfect pumpkin" and that's the best part of picking. You can select pumpkins that are completely orange or partially green, it is all up to you. Depending on what you are going to do with the pumpkin, the size of a pumpkin is an important factor. Large and medium pumpkins are best for carving into a Jack O Lantern. Small pumpkins are better for cooking and baking.
Ok, so pumpkins are orange.......... everybody knows that. But did you know they come in lots of other colors too. You can find pumpkins that are green, yellow, red, white, blue, even tan. So, pumpkin lovers like you and me have lots of variety to choose from. What's your favorite pumpkin colors?
The typical Orange Jack O'Lanterns that you and I think about when we think of pumpkins come in a couple hundred varieties of orange.
When a Jack O'Lantern pumpkin is unripe, it is green. Some varieties are a pale green, while others are a dark green.
Although they are somewhat uncommon, both Jack O'Lantern and miniature pumpkins come in white varieties. Casper and Baby Boo are the most common white varieties.
If you want really a rare pumpkin, try growing a Blue Pumpkin. They are often referred to as Australian Blue Pumpkins, or Jaradale. More closely resembling a Turban squash than a true pumpkin, they are smaller and flatter than a Jack O'Lantern, with a bluish grey color.
There are two varieties of Red pumpkins ... the "Rouge D'Etant and also one called Cinderella.
Have you ever wondered where the canned pumpkin from the store comes from? Commercial food processors use Tan pumpkins to make canned pumpkin puree. Very few homeowners grow them.
There are lots of little homegrown patches in the Hemlock area where you can find great pumpkins, but if you're looking for something larger check out these places: Grandma's Pumpkin Patch in Midland and Johnson's Giants Pumpkins in Saginaw.
