Welcome Back
There's no better time than now to recommit to your morning and home routines as well as check in with your own Stallion about how they're feeling about school. With summer on the horizon, it's easy to let some routines slip but committing to these will ensure a much more successful Stretch to Summer!
Building Resiliency: Part 2
Is today’s parenting filled with “over”? Over-accommodating, over-explaining, over-negotiating, over-asking, over-thinking, over-suggesting, over-fixing. As parents, we have learned so much from our previous generations. We hear and listen to our children’s wants and needs, we want to understand and acknowledge their opinions, and we make space for their thoughts and feelings. This is a wonderful thing! But have we taken it too far? Are we no longer allowing our children to struggle? To face challenges? To manage through difficulty? And as a result, when they are faced with struggles, big or small, are they falling apart? It’s tough to balance helping our children with the right level of support and independence.
Children need to grow their own mental muscles in order to build resilience. You cannot “lift the weights” for them and expect their muscles to grow stronger. You can help and support your child through difficulties, absolutely, but you don’t do this by trying to take the difficulty away. You do this by teaching them to face the difficulty head-on and slowly manage through it. At first with your support, until eventually, they can do this on their own.
If your child comes to you with a problem, for example, they can’t find their shoes, they’re bored, they got in an argument with a friend, they’re worried about something…
Validate and witness their struggle. “Yes, that does sound difficult…I hear you.” or “I can see this is difficult for you.”
Coach them to find strength from within to problem solve, broaden their perspective, and cope. “Hmm…what do you think you can do to make this better?” or “Tell me more.”
Give them the space to practice their own problem-solving skills and trust in their natural abilities to cope. “I know this feels like a big challenge. I also know that you are brave and capable. Let’s take our time and think about it. We can figure out what to do next.” or “How do you think you can help yourself?”
