A Message from our School Psychologist
Hello everyone and Happy December! This week focuses on taking preventative steps to making your December and the greater holiday season more successful, smooth, and happy for everyone - making your job as a parent hopefully easier!
Resource of the Week:
- The Therapist Parent is a website, blog, Facebook account written by Psychologist, Krysten Taprell, accessible for free, and helpful for reminding us of the little things to keep in mind as we tackle the day-to-day with our children. By "following" her account on Facebook, I've seen her posts numerous times as I scroll through my account, and have found them to be helpful reminders for both the students I work with and my own children!
Article of the Week:
- Cooperation, Not Obedience as a Goal of Parenting - This is one of the many blog posts by The Therapist Parent, and a great reminder of when to pick battles, even when we become frustrated, and how to foster cooperation and empower them as their own individual selves so that our children are more likely to cooperate in the future with what we ask of them.
Family Activity:
- Now that it's officially December, the holiday season is in full gear and it seems like there is so much going on around us and so much to do! It can be really important to talk about expectations for this season as a family (sitting down together at dinner is ideal). What is everyone hoping to do? What is everyone most excited about? While it is all very exciting, it can also be very overwhelming, especially since the items we place on ourselves "to do" can become stressors. Try to spend some time in the coming days as a family setting realistic expectations, and talking about what you will definitely do vs. try to do, and talk about what happens if you can't do something, because we really can't do it all! This will help everyone with regulating their emotions if they end up feeling disappointed, help them bounce back so they can more focus on the positive, and help YOU feel better overall as a parent!
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend/week ahead!
