The Pez Press
Week of Oct. 11th
A Note from Mr.Pez
We are pleased to announce that our West Maple Musical will be returning this year! On Friday morning I made the announcement that we will be performing..... THE JUNGLE BOOK. Our 3-5th graders who are interested will have a chance to audition and become part of this yearly tradition. More information regarding this will be coming soon. All students will be able to come and see the performance which will take place in early May. Thank you in advance to Mr. Haines, Ms. Manning, and Mrs. Dalman for bringing our musical back to life this year.
5th Grade Mile Run
This past Saturday at Groves High School our 5th graders had an opportunity to participate in the mile run. It was an incredible event attending by students from across the district. Congratulations to all our runners and especially Jackson, Cora, and Milo on their top ten finishes. A thank you to Mr. Boggiano for working with our 5th graders and coaching them through this experience. Some pictures from the event are included below.
Halloween Parade & Parties
All West Maple students and staff will enjoy an OUTDOOR Halloween costume parade and indoor classroom parties on Friday, October 29th. Parents and guests are welcome to view the OUTDOOR parade, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. This parade has become an annual tradition at our school and is enjoyed by all who attend. New this year, the classroom parties will be for reserved students and the room parents that have volunteered for that classroom. Due to social distancing and spacing, we have to limit guests inside the building. A map of the parade route and parking areas will be sent out the week of the event.
We are encouraging students to wear their costumes to class on Friday, October 29th. Teachers will be working with our room parents to provide Halloween activities for students to engage in during class. We will not be serving any food or drinks at school.
We want to make the day fun and not a scary one for our littlest students so we have developed a few “costume rules."
1. All costumes need to be age-appropriate for elementary students.
2. Costumes should not be based on making fun of real people, real human traits or cultures.
3. If the costume is scary, is the fear factor appropriate to this age children?
4. If your child is wearing a historical costume, make sure that it does not present misinformation or inaccuracies.
5. Students MAY NOT under any circumstances bring toy guns, knives, swords or other weapons to school, even if they are parts of their costumes. Included in this ban are hockey sticks, baseball bats and other pieces of sports equipment because these items present potential safety hazards.
6. Costume Masks are fine as long as the students can see clearly through them. And please avoid any costumes that have fake blood or gore – too scary for many of our students.
Trunk or Treat
Finally, we only currently have 7 cars signed up for our Trunk or Treat event. We need at least 25-30 cars to make this event successful. If you are willing to decorate and sign up your car please fill out the form below my message.
Thanks for all you do,

A Note from Mrs. Richardson
Greetings from the Vocal Music Room!! We have had a fantastic beginning to our year, working on all kinds of musical skills, such as learning to recognize and read musical notation, discovering our singing voices, and playing instruments! We continue to explore music through singing games, working in groups to sing various parts at the same time, and performing solos in class. These amazing students are absolutely fantastic! Keep it up! J
Your child(ren) may have noticed a new addition to the playground area. We are excited to share that Oakland Schools has provided us with a Communication Core Board for our playground to help facilitate interactions between students who use their voices to communicate and students who use other forms of communication such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. The Communication Core Board has both words and symbols which helps all children. In the next week, your child(ren)’s teacher will be provided with a tutorial video regarding how we can use the board (and additional mini versions throughout the building) to make communication accessible for all students, throughout all of West Maple. This is one many steps we are taking toward creating a more inclusive environment for all of our students. Next time you are at the playground, we encourage you to take a look for yourself and show your child(ren) how to ask questions like, “Do you want to play, climb, etc..?” with their classmates.

West Maple Ski Club
Do you know that West Maple has a ski club? It is open to kids 7+ and we meet at Pine Knob every Monday evening in January and February. Kids (and parents, if they choose) can ski or snowboard at a discounted ski club rate. The ski club sponsors, Brian and Hillary Orlowski, will meet with Pine Knob at the end of October to finalize this seasons details. Please look for further communication in November and feel free to reach out with any questions in the meantime. We hope to see you on the slopes!
Hello West Maple family members-
Miler’s Club is a PTA sponsored voluntary running club, which takes places every Monday during lunch recess for approximately 8 weeks in the fall, and then again in the spring.
The goal of this program is to encourage physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Students will run quarter mile laps around the field behind the playground and earn foot-shaped charms for every mile they run!
Students DO NOT NEED TO SIGN-UP. They just head out to the back field during their lunch recess and run as much or as little as they want.
To make this program possible, parent/family member volunteers are absolutely vital. This is a fun way to connect with your child and encourage their participation. Volunteers will help record student mileage, hand out water and foot charms, and cheer students on!
Volunteers are needed on Mondays from 11 AM- 1:30 PM. Please help make this program possible by signing up:
Thank you so much for your continued support. We couldn’t have so many great opportunities for our children without such a strong family support network!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
