Welcome Back to School
I hope everyone has had an easy transition back to school this week. Our staff was so excited to have your children join us and quickly began to get everyone settled in to our school. We enjoyed meeting with every grade level to make sure everyone knows their principal, assistant principal, instructional coach and counselor, and they all know who to come to if they ever have a question or concern.
Our morning drop off begins at 7:05. We ask that you wait until that time before dropping off your student because we do not have personnel in place until 7:05 to monitor students. In addition, it greatly helps with the flow of traffic if you only drop off at the curb in front of the school and do not drop students off at the flag pole or walk them inside. With so many cars dropping off students each day, we want to get everyone off campus as quickly as possible and limiting the crossing of the main drive greatly helps with that effort. The tardy bell rings at 7:30, so students need to be in their classrooms by 7:30 each day to not be counted tardy.
We have taken the time to ensure students know which bus they will ride in the afternoon which has caused buses to leave campus later than usual. We will begin releasing students directly to their buses beginning Monday afternoon.
We hope that you are able to join us on Curriculum Night the week of August 21st. This is a great time to hear from your teacher about the specifics on how they organize their school day for instruction.
Please join us in asking your student, “What book are you reading”? We want to ensure that all YES students have a quality book at all times and feel a part of a reading community at school and at home.
Thank you so much for sharing your children with us each day,

Yarbrough Takes You Places
We will begin with BELONGING. Every teacher will work to make sure your student feels like he or she belongs at Yarbrough. We will help students understand what it means to be a community of learners. "For a child to flourish, she must know that she is a valued member of a community and that her unique voice is respected." Specifically with reading, we will foster book clubs, book talks, and other ways for children to see that they belong to a community of readers.
Next, we will explore CURIOSITY. As we introduce the trait of curiosity we will encourage a "willingness to explore new territory and test new theories." We want to spark conversations that lead our students to wonder and allow them the chance to use books, people, and the world around them to discover answers for themselves.

All prescription medications and over the counter medications being kept at school for more than 10 days must have a Prescriber Parent Authorization form (PPA) completed by the Prescriber. All medications must be delivered to school by an adult.
We have many students with food allergies. Please help us keep them safe at school by checking with your student's teacher before bringing in food to share with the class.

The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
What is the role of the school counselor?
Elementary school counselors foster the educational, career, and social/emotional development of students throughout their academic careers. Our goal is to support students in reaching their full academic potential and enjoy a positive school experience. We work with students, parents, teachers, and staff members to help students receive the support needed to be successful. As counselors, we meet with students individually, in small groups, and in a whole class format (Guidance Class). We teach students various coping strategies, skills, and methods to handle various challenges. Students, parents, and teachers may request counseling services. All counseling services are brief and solution focused. We also provide referrals as necessary for more intense services at parents’ request. Counselors act as a liaison providing information and resources with school based support systems and outside agencies.
This month's lessons include "What is a school counselor?" and "The Seven Habits of Happy Kids."
I look forward to serving as your student’s school counselor.

Quote of the Month:
Attitude Is Everything
“One of the most important steps you can take toward achieving your greatest potential in life is to learn to monitor your attitude and its impact on you work performance, relationships and everyone around you.” Keith Harrell
Leader Lessons
Habit #1 is "Be Proactive."
Key phrase: You're in Charge
What this habit looks like in action: I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
The Yarbrough staff is focused on growing leaders one habit at a time!
