Mrs. King's 2nd Grade Class!

January 29, 2016

Foces and Motion

Last week we experimented with Hot Wheels! We made 4 different ramps at various heights. The students predicted which ramp they thought the cars would travel the furthest on.

This week, we'll take what we learned from that experiment, and students will work in small groups to create their own car out of soup cans. (This is a project that will be completed all at school, but you can feel free to send in items from home. There is information about what we need below. ) Our culminating activity will be a contest for the entire 2nd grade! Students will get to race their cars down a track against their peers.

2-2 Tuesday

On Tuesday, February 2nd, Thorpe Creek is going to celebrate 2-2 Tuesday! This day will not happen again until sometime after the year 2020. Please have your child join in on the fun by wearing tutu's, wear a shirt or outfit with a 2 on it (sports shirt possibly), use masking tape to put the number two all over your shirt, wear 2 of something, make a construction paper hat/headband with the number 2 on it, etc.!! Get creative! I can't wait to see what the kids come up with! I'll see you next TWOsday!!

Valentine's Day!

It's hard to believe that Valentine's Day is just a few weeks away. I sent home a class list this week for our Valentine's Day card exchange. Please remember that if your child participates then they should make a card for every student. Also, HSE policy states that students may not pass out food/candy with cards.

As you know, we have started our Forces and Motion Science Unit. 2nd grade is planning on learning more about forces and motion by creating cars. We need donations of soup cans, paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, wrapping paper tubes, duct tape and anything that might help built a car out of a soup can (wheels, etc!). Please have your child send these items in as soon as possible! We will start creating on Monday. We will test our final creations next Friday, February 5th!

Global Day of Play!

Wednesday, February 3rd from 12:30-3:25 we will participate in a Global Day of Play! To help make this day successful, students are invited to bring in their favorite game or toy from home to play in class. Some examples can include: board games, dolls, Legos, blocks, trucks, cars, racetracks, playing cards, empty cardboard boxes, markers, jigsaw puzzles, blankets (for forts), social games (charades, Pictionary, etc.). We will enjoy learning from each other and from games that afternoon! Looking forward to sharing how this afternoon of learning through play goes!

Congratulations to Elliot and Philip for being chosen for January's Responsibility Students of the Month. Elliot and Philip will be invited to eat lunch with Mrs. Curran on the stage in the cafeteria. Next month we will be focusing on respect!

We are Learning...

We will continue our study of nonfiction texts. We will be learning how to gather information from informational texts so that we can become experts on a topic. We will focus on various nonfiction features and study them in more detail.

We will focus on addition and subtraction, with and without regrouping using number up to 1,000!

We will continue working on our Magic Tree House Stories. I am so amazed at the writing the kids are doing! Can't wait to show the off!

We will continue our study of forces and motion. We will study how objects move in different ways such as straight, backwards, back-and-forth, etc. We will also be studying how applied forces such as a push or pull can change the motion of objects.

Word Study:

Word study in 2nd grade includes spelling, phonics, and vocabulary development. We will be focusing on 11 new vocabulary words. Those words are: friction, motion, speed, force, zig-zag, position, direction, gravity, magnetism, attract, and repel.
