What's New in Second Grade?

October-November 2018

CogAT

Dear Parents,

The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) will be administered between October 1-31, 2018. All Hillsboro School District students in grade two will participate in the district wide assessment. Teacher will use this information to inform their instruction.

The CogAT is a nationally normed-referenced assessment that measures general reasoning and problem solving skills. Results from the CogAT indicate how well a student uses these types of skills to solve verbal, quantitative and nonverbal reasoning problems.

The CogAT goes beyond measuring the skills a student has learned in the classroom (achievement skills). It measures abilities developed from birth through a child's experiences during and outside the school. A student's score on the CogAT primarily reflects his or her ability to identify relationships between objects and numbers and to demonstrate flexibility in thinking.

Results will be available to parents sometime in May. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.

Thank you for your support,

Artist Study

We have studied and imitated some very famous artists so far this year, including Vincent Van Gogh, Tong Yu, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian and Jackson Pollock.

Math Updates

Second grade will be a busy year learning to tell time and count money!

We have been using number racks to learn different ways of breaking apart numbers to count by ones, fives and tens.

We've also been using glyphs, or symbols, to communicate information.

Language Updates

Mrs. Miller and Ms. Paniagua come in to our classrooms each day to Co-Teach language lessons. We focus on specific parts of speech like adjectives and context clues. Listen for your second grader to start noticing these skills we are practicing at home!

Reading Updates

We have started our small reading groups using our Daily 5 rotations. On a weekly basis, students will visit different stations where they get to:

- Listen to Reading

- Work on Writing

- Word Work (with our spelling words)

- Read to Someone

- Work with the Teacher

Please practice the spelling words with your child each week. The words go home on Monday. We have spelling tests on Fridays.

Science/Social Studies Updates

We just finished learning about plants and animals. We looked at how they depend on each other to survive and did fun experiments with different types of seeds to see how they are dispersed.

We are starting our next unit on Communities and Community Helpers.
