Klem North Chronicles
February 2020
Meet Our New Assistant Principal
Dear Klem Road North Families,
I am pleased to announce that Sarah Welsh has accepted the position as the new assistant principal for Klem Road North Elementary School. She will begin in March 2020 upon Webster CSD Board of Education approval during its February 6 meeting.
Mrs. Welsh has 12 years of educational experience as an elementary special education teacher for Penfield CSD. While in Penfield, she served as a member of both the Restorative Practices and Social Emotional Committees at Cobbles Elementary School. She has been actively involved with her families as a PTA and SEPTA (Special Education PTA) representative, along with assisting the district in the yearly planning and implementation of its extended school year program (K-12). Mrs. Welsh also served as the extended school year program principal and as a mentor and instructional coach to new teachers.
I am confident that Mrs. Welsh’s innate ability to connect and effectively communicate with students, families, administrators, and teachers will have a positive impact on our school community. Her organization, collaboration, and mentoring skills have been integral to her previous successes. I’m thrilled that she will be sharing her personal and professional strengths with all of us at Klem North.
Mrs. Welsh received her undergraduate degree from St. John Fisher College and master’s degree from The College at Brockport, State University of New York. She earned her Advanced Certification as a New York State School Building Leader and School District Leader from the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. Mrs. Welsh lives in Fairport with her husband, Casey Welsh.
Mrs. Welsh shared with me that she gladly embraces the opportunity to work with and learn from the students, faculty, and staff at Klem North. She is looking forward to contributing to our outstanding school culture while continuing to build a collaborative learning environment for our students. Mrs. Welsh truly reflects our district’s vision, “Compassionately Connected, Joyfully Engaged, Always Learning”.
Please join me in giving Mrs. Welsh a warm Klem North welcome!
Sincerely,
Laura Ballou
Building Principal

After School Pickups
Our after school programs at Klem North have increased this year. Many of our children are attending WonderCare, fourth and fifth graders are participating in Activity Period, and soon our PTSA and other outside organizations plan on having clubs back up and running.
As a result, we want to streamline our pick up procedures. All families who are picking up their child(ren) from any of these after school programs listed above should report to Door #17 (when looking at the building, this door is to the right of the main entrance). For the safety and security of our students, a staff member will be at this door ready to greet you until 6:00 PM.
Just to clarify, our main office foyer will also still be the pick up location at our normal dismissal time (2:00 PM) and on all half days due to parent teacher conferences (10:00 AM).
Thank you,
Laura

WHEN:DFCC Awarded $625K Grant to Prevent Youth Substance Abuse in Webster
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) recently announced an additional round of 42 new grants for its Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, bringing the number of total grants to more than 700 for Fiscal Year (FY) 2019. Among the 42 additional recipients is the Webster Health & Education Network: a Drug Free Community Coalition (WHEN: DFCC), one of only two second round grant recipients in New York State. The 42 additional grants announced in December 2019, combined with the 150 new grants announced in October 2019, represent a total Federal investment of approximately $24 million to new community coalitions alone in FY 2019.
WHEN:DFCC will receive $625,000 over the next five years in DFC grant funds to involve and engage its local community to prevent substance use among youth. WHEN:DFCC was established as the Webster Health and Education Network (WHEN) in 1995 by members of the Webster community and the Webster Central School District to link individuals and community groups in the promotion of healthy behaviors through awareness, education, and action. In 2016, WHEN established itself as a Drug Free Community Coalition, and joined Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America as WHEN:DFCC.
We congratulate WHEN:DFCC on receiving this grant and for the work its members continue to do on behalf of our young people.
