The Carleton Chronicle
A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
Greetings from Carleton!
This week, the Chronicle opens with several important items to note and celebrate.
On Monday of this week, Ms. Kuszpit and I represented Carleton at the MISD "Green Schools Celebration." This program recognizes schools who are working to conserve energy and protect natural resources. Our school's "Emerald" status is one of the highest bestowed from the group. I thank Ms. Kuszpit and our Ecology Club for leading this effort for our school and for being advocates for our environment.
I want to thank the parents in attendance on Tuesday evening's informational millage meeting. It was great to see a full board room of community members. Remember, our last meeting before the May 2nd election is April 25th at 6pm. I hope to see you there.
Thursday evening, Ms. Syswerda and I were guests at the MISD "Teacher of the Year Celebration." I again congratulate Ms. Syswerda for her well-deserved recognition as she represents the middle schools of Warren Consolidated Schools.
Reports cards came home with students on Thursday afternoon and the results of the spring NWEA were mailed home earlier this week. Please be sure to praise your student on their progress and achievements.
Lastly, as the principal of Carleton, my goal is for the collective voice of our community to be heard at the polls on May 2 when our community votes in a millage renewal. If approved, the millage will keep school funding at a reliable level for 10 years in WCS. For more information visit www.wcskids.net. Please be informed and please vote on May 2nd.

Parents,
As we enter the final stretch of the school year, Mr. Kausch and I have been working on finishing the year strong. This is a challenging time of year for our students as the days get longer, the weather gets warmer, and they can see the inevitable summer break which means sleeping in, more time with friends, and a break from their work here at school. As we work as a staff to finish our year strong and get the most out of each day I ask that you consider having some of the conversations that I have with my own middle schooler, where I discuss what it means to go to work and emphasize to him that school is his job and it is where he will learn many non-academic skills that will benefit him in the working world. Here is a short list of the rules for work that we emphasize in our house:
1.) Give 100% of what you have each day. We understand that our children might not feel their best, may be upset about something, or might just struggle some days. We ask that on those days where they are not 100% they still give the best that they have.
2.) Treat your colleagues and your bosses with respect even when you disagree. All three of the Clark children don't like some of their assignments and at home voice their displeasure. We remind them that their mother and I also have to do things we don't like in our jobs, but we do them because our bosses ask us to.
3.) Show up early and work hard when you are at work. We tell our children how important it is to show up before work starts, for them that means being in class and seated before the bell rings. Then once they are there they have to work for their entire "shift". Adults that have learned to show up early and work their entire shift find themselves rising to the top of their jobs and respective pay scales more often then not. We remind our children of this as well.
Thank you for reading and #finishstrong.
