Istation Data Testing

Last week students were assessed on reading skills using the Istation program. All students should complete their Istation learning path per their April tier group to help develop their reading skills. Tier 1 students scored at grade level and should do 30 minutes of reading practice. Tier 2 students scored slightly below grade level and should do 60 minutes of practice weekly. Tier 3 students scored below grade level and are considered in need of intervention; these students should complete 90 minutes of reading practice each week. Istation learning path reading practice is done for homework weekly, but may be done in elective class if there is time in the schedule. Students will take their last Istation assessment May 1-6 in their English Language Arts classes.

Official 2015-2016 BCBE Calendar

This is the newly approved calendar option for the 2015-2016 school year. The first calendar to be approved was determined not a good fit for the business of Baldwin County. This is the option that has been approved since the second vote took place.

Court

Get your best dresses and ties, because Daphne Middle School’s Court Dance is almost here! This year, the theme is Masquerade. April 17th, 2015 is this year’s dance date, the Friday after Spring Break. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5 and concessions will be available. Court is a dance at the end of the year where 7th graders and 8th graders get together in nice dresses or long-sleeves and ties and listen to music, dance, and spend time with friends. Each year, there is an actual Court, usually about 10 girls and 10 guys from the 8th grade are voted for by their peers to see who are on Court. From that listing, a Court Queen and King are voted from that list. I hope to see all of you at court and have an amazing time.

Art of the Week

Art students are creating their own versions of famous works of art made by artists they studied previously.

Just Breathe

Just Breathe, a new Yoga Club at DMS starts Wednesday, April 15. The focus is using yoga to learn coping strategies for reducing stress and anxiety. Kenney Jackson, a certified yoga instructor, is volunteering an hour of his time for the next 6 weeks to help students focus on breathing through the hard times. Fifteen spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. For more information click here and email Mrs. Amanda Blake with any questions.

Students are expected to be on DEES campus by 8:00 A.M. to sign in and be assigned their stations. Students are also expected to bring a packed lunch or money for concession. What’s happened to Zayn Malik?

Wednesday, March 25, was when Zayn Malik announced he was quitting the band, One Direction. This left many fans devastated and confused on the whole reason why he quit. The number is uncertain, but there were many suicides due to Zayn’s leaving. To some people, they may find it quite ridiculous to kill yourself over a band member. You have to consider someone else’s home-life, and the struggles they go through. They feel this band is the only source of happiness in their life. They make them smile everyday and make them feel good about themselves, and all of a sudden the band is no longer the same. There are many rumors on the reason Zayn suddenly quit. One was that he left because of stress and dealing with anxiety throughout the tour. Another rumor was that he signed to become a solo artist and work with an artist named Naughty Boy. The last reason that has stuck out the most, is that a fan realized all of this could be a publicity stunt. This fan posted a video revealing her theory on why Zayn left, and surprisingly all the facts lined up. With all these rumors and no clarification, it just leaves the fandom in utter confusion. If this isn’t a PR stunt and Zayn really quit, is One Direction better off as a four-man band?

Shark Attack

Going to the beach for spring break maybe fun, but there are many things you need to be aware of, like sharks. Some tips are as follows. Bright and flashy swimming wear maybe fun to wear, but colors of high contrast can attract sharks. Don’t wear any jewelry! The sun will reflect off of it and make it look like the scales of a fish. So that would make you look like their food. Bright yellows or oranges, like wearing a life jacket can attract sharks. But if you are in an open ocean then you need to consider it since rescuers can see you more visibly. Next, the top 3 deadliest sharks of all! Number 3 the Tiger shark. It can grow to be 16-18 feet long and weigh up to 1,400 pounds . Number 2, the Bull shark. The bull can grow up to about eight feet and weigh 694 pounds. The deadliest shark of all 375 species is the Great White shark with an outstanding length of 21 feet and weighs as much as 7,328 pounds! Each year there are about 50 to 70 confirmed shark attacks and 5 to 15 shark-attack fatalities around the world. Over 375 shark species have been identified, but only about a dozen are considered particularly dangerous. So even though you may be having a blast at the beach, just remember you’re swimming in someone’s home too! Have a safe and jawsome spring break!
