Chancellor News and Notes
October 15-19, 2018
It feels like October!
B.B. King once said, "The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you." Learning is a celebration! You are giving your students something today that will be with them for the rest of their lives. Watch for those little successes and milestones occurring in your classroom, and CELEBRATE every chance you get!
Not only that, but we are breathing, we are living, and we are grateful to be alive and in good health, with a career and a home, and people who love us (yes, you are loved!). Make every moment count, and let's have a fantastic week!
Reminders for the week:
- Report Cards are due! They need to be uploaded so we can check them and get any revisions done that need to take place before sending home
- Please double-check report cards (grades 1-5: don't forget your conduct comments and to mark intervention for students receiving intervention)
- Monday is Dessert Day! (if you bring a dessert, you get to participate!)
- Tuesday is Picture Day! Yes, it is Tuesday. For real this time. :)
- Tuesday is Boss's Day
- Report Cards go home Thursday
- Staff Game Night is Thursday after school
- Friday is STAT and the beginning of Book Fair!
Dress Code Reminder
Alief ISD has a business-casual dress code policy. We do have a few days that are a little different, which are listed below:
- Mondays- College or career shirt with business-casual bottoms
- Wednesdays (in October)- Pink shirt with jeans
- Fridays- Spirit Shirt with jeans
If you are wearing jeans on a different day, please turn in your jeans pass for the day to Marie!
Comet of the Week is... Karina Santibanez!
Congratulations, Mrs. Santibanez, for being our Comet of the Week! You have earned a jeans pass, snack shack coupon, and your name on the Comet of the Week board! You also get to nominate next week's Comet of the Week!
Staff- please help us show some love to our Comet of the Week by writing her a note on the bulletin board! And recognize each other on our Staff-Shout-outs! Gratitude makes life a little sweeter for everyone! :)
I-STATEMENTS: a tool you can use!
You can teach students to speak for themselves in a constructive and positive manner, using I-Statements. I-statements are utilized by many disciplinary gurus, psychologists, behaviorally interventionists, etc., and have been a time-tested and proven tool to help anyone express their needs to another person, without resorting to negativity or violence. Students must be taught to use their words effectively, and what better way than a sentence stem?! We know this supports our students academically, but it can also support them emotionally. Below is a sentence stem you can post in your room, and use with your students. Teach them this stem to go through problem/solution conversation, and practice with each other. You can also use the stem yourself!
I feel ____ when ____, because ____. I need ____.
Example: I feel frustrated when I hear pencils tapping on the desk because it is distracting to me when I teach my small group. Could you please stop tapping during small group?
Flashback to the 50's!
50th Day of School is on October 25th!
Fall Festival is October 26!
Encourage ticket sales with students, and send donations to the front office as they start to come in. If you have any connections for donations of activities, food, drink, or prizes, please let us know- anything is welcome! Looking forward to all the fun with our families and staff!
