“Deeper than the Skin: A Musical Presentation on Race”
Hello, my name is Sarah Schuler and I am the Parish Council President for the Nazareth College Catholic Community. I would love to share about two upcoming events!
The William H. Shannon Chair in Catholic Studies strives to bring distinguished speakers, scholars, and writers to Nazareth College for a unique lecture series offered to students and the community of Rochester. This year’s theme is “Neighbor to Neighbor: A Call to Solidarity”. Echoing the vision of Pope Francis and the college’s founding Sisters of Saint Joseph, this year’s scholars and active voices embody this call to self-reflection and contemplation on individual and collective identity. In a world that focuses so intently on what divides, the William H. Shannon Chair is dedicated to wrestle with current social justice issues and the responsibilities that each of us have in addressing discrimination, marginalization, and violence within a globalized world.
This week we will be welcoming two inspiring and talented individuals to our campus community. Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway will be the first of the William H. Shannon Chair lecture series.
“Deeper than the Skin: A Musical Presentation on Race” will be
THIS Wednesday, September 18th at 7pm in Beston Hall in Glazer Performance Hall.
THIS Thursday September 19th, at 4pm to 7pm in the Forum, Reggie will also be leading a workshop for a more personalized discussion and space for dialogue and reflection.
I had the privilege to meet Reggie Harris on the Civil Rights Journey this past January, where students from Nazareth College traveled through historical places in the South. From Birmingham to Selma, and Nashville to Memphis, we witnessed how the civil rights movement was shaped by communities committed to speaking out against so many social injustices. My personal experience on this retreat was one that is difficult to describe. I can say that it made me uncomfortable, uneasy in my own skin, because of the difficult conversations and truths I had to face about myself. I was forced to wrestle with my identity with such honesty in order to be fully present and bear witness to a history that has been left out of our country’s narrative.
In the midst of unsettling truths, a painful history, and untold stories, there was Reggie. He brought something powerful and unique to this Journey; his presence carried a purpose and weight that was passed on to the group. Reggie’s passion and spirit, conveyed through his music and songs, spoke a difficult but necessary truth- we need to discuss and embrace these conversations, despite the discomfort that might follow. Reggie creates a unifying space for dialogue, committed to speaking the truth no matter what. I encourage everyone to attend this presentation, as Reggie and Greg share how they wrestle with these deep questions in the most universal form: music.
In preparation for this incredible opportunity, we invite you all to a community gathering tonight after our 7:00PM Mass. We will come together to talk a bit more about the impact of fear of the Other, hate rhetoric, racism, and the response that each of us are called to take up. We hope to see many of you there for a rich discussion in preparation for Reggie and Greg!
Peace,
Sarah

Deeper Than the Skin: A Musical Presentation on Race
THIS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2019 from 7:00PM – 9:30PM
Beston Hall, Glazer Music Performance Center
Open to Nazareth College and Rochester Community
Attendance is Free and No Ticket Required
Born three days apart, with ancestry coming through the same portal of history, Richmond, VA, Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway are on a pilgrimage together, one that began three decades ago. The racial divisions that are the reality of America positioned them in two different worlds, but the amazing bonds of music, respect, admiration, and shared vision have brought them together as friends and colleagues. The musical and spiritual blooming of this history has become Deeper than the Skin, the telling of their stories through words and music. It is a quintessentially American story: The gift they have to give is how to face struggle with hope, and even joy.

NEXT SUNDAY: Mass of the Holy Spirit - OUTSIDE!
NEXT, Sunday, September 22nd at 7:00PM, we will celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit. A special blessing will be offered for students, faculty and staff. If the weather cooperates, Mass will be celebrated outside at the Garen Peace Garden fountain located in front of GAC. Be sure to bring a coat or a sweatshirt!
The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a Jesuit tradition that dates back to 1548 and is usually celebrated at the beginning of an academic year. As part of this liturgy, we will ask for the inspiration, guidance, and presence of God's Spirit as we begin this semester.
Adoration and Compline: Take a Study Break and Spend Time in Silence and Stillness
