APP SMASHING
GET STUDENTS CREATING!
CREATE APP SMASH MENUS
We are currently working on animal research projects and writing "All About" books with many text features included.
We're writing one page at a time, then publishing it on an iPad. So by the time their book is written they'll have a published hard copy, and a digital version of each page that we can add to, and create a movie with.
They've been using different apps all year to create and share what they've learned, so I feel very comfortable offering them these menus. I'm so excited to see what / how they choose and create!
Last week I discovered ABCya.com's app Word Clouds, and was so excited! I've played with several word cloud generators for the iPad before, but hadn't found one I really loved enough to pay for on all our district iPads when we could make them on online for free. Word Clouds is free for right now, so download it today! Side note - It would be worth it to pay for it when it's no longer free. It's really easy for young kiddos to use.
It's simple for students to type a list of words, or paste text, and generate a word cloud. Then, use the menu bar across the top to edit how their cloud looks. It would be a great tool for analyzing writing, sharing thinking, brainstorming, and anything else you might want a word cloud generator for.
Use Educreations to have students record thoughts and make student thinking visible. We underlined words as we read, but wouldn't it be cool to see how individual students annotate the word cloud as they think aloud?
As a class review of digraphs, before we played some games, we made a short simple word list, and imported it into Word Clouds. Then, we imported it into Educreations and added the sounds. We now have a fun little video we can use to review or share with kindergarten.
Must take a look at this one!

Smashing Steps
Smashing Steps
What's your objective? Do you want students to summarize something? Analyze? Recite? Have them create a product for your objective using any app that will allow them to save to the photo library (Pic Collage, Doodlebuddy, Fonta, Skitch, ColorSplash, Labelbox)Open Zoobe or Tellagami app and choose the characters (more customizing in Tellagami). Change the background to the product you just created, record your voice (or use one of the 16 voices in Tellagami). Save your finished product to your photo library.
Upload your product directly to YouTube from your photo library or you could create multiple products and stitch them all together in the iMovie app.
