Black Icons
Barack Obama
Barack Obama was the 44th President of the United States of America and the first person of African-American origin to hold this position. Obama graduated in political science from Columbia University and from Harvard Law School, where he was the first black person to direct the Harvard Law Review. Before completing his law studies, he served as a community organizer in Chicago. Later he worked as a lawyer in the field of civil rights defense, also teaching constitutional law at the Law School of the University of Chicago from 1992 to 2004. In 2009, the Nobel Committee awarded Obama the Nobel Peace Prize.
Bessie Coleman
Despite being the first licensed Black pilot in the world, Bessie Coleman wasn’t recognized as a pioneer in aviation until after her death. Though history has favored Amelia Earhart or the Wright brothers, Coleman, who went to flight school in France in 1919, paved the way for a new generation of diverse fliers like the Tuskegee airmen, Blackbirds, and Flying Hobos.

His ashes are interred beneath a floor medallion in the middle of the foyer in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, the entrance to an auditorium named for him.
Muddy Waters
An American blues singer-songwriter and musician who is often lauded as the "father of modern Chicago blues", Waters grew up on a plantation in Mississippi and by the age of 17 was playing the guitar and the harmonica. This week, chat with your child(ren) about:
- Grade 2: Thinking of Solutions: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that thinking of more than one way to solve a problem can help them find one that works better or that they like better. Try This at Home: Ask your child to explain why it can be good to think of more than one way to solve a problem.
- Grade 3: S: Say the Problem: In this week’s lesson your child will learn how to say a problem by thinking about what each person wants or needs. Try This at Home: Ask your child how they would say a problem respectfully, without blaming anyone.
- Grade 4: Saying It Respectfully: In this week’s lesson, your child will begin to learn a process for solving interpersonal problems. They’ll learn how to say the problem respectfully and without blame. Try This at Home. Talk with your child about an interpersonal problem they’ve had at home. Help your child think about each person’s point of view, and then work together to say the problem respectfully.
- Grade 5: When? Where? Who? In this lesson, your child will consider when, where, and with whom it would be best to work on an interpersonal problem. Try This at Home: Ask your child why it’s important to think about when, where, and with whom it would be best to work on an interpersonal problem.
