The Latest
There are not many updates this week, as we all get into a semblance of a routine with this new schedule and way of doing things.
Please remind you student(s) that it is important to log-in to synchronous sessions on time. We are using the time on the LCPS devices to determine when to start and stop sessions.
Regarding Monday attendance, LCPS believes they have worked out the issues with the Permission Click form, and will be attempting the process outlined last Friday on Monday, September 21st. Details are below.
If you have problems with the form, please wait at least an hour and try it again. If you still have trouble, please let Ms. Anderson know (angie.anderson@lcps.org). However, LCPS does have a back-up plan, in case the system has issues again.
For our students in Grades 9-11, please be sure to schedule a time to get your school pictures taken. The link is below. Please note: this is not mandatory and the Yearbook is working out a plan for those who cannot get their pictures taken by Victor O' Neill Studios.
Clubs can begin meeting virtually, if they haven't already. Students just need to reach out to the sponsors. For more information about Clubs, students can look at the Activities section on the website or contact Mr. Yorke, our activities coordinator, at timothy.yorke@lcps.org.
For our Seniors, there are a couple of updates down below, including the link to pay for your cap and gown and t-shirt.
Please continue to reach out to us! We are here to support your child(ren) and are working hard to do so!
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership!

Cyber-Patriot Club is looking for members
CyberPatriot is a wonderful opportunity for students as they get hands on cyber security experience! As Ms. Hale describes it: "The coolest thing about CyberPatriot is the way it brings together different types of computer technology thinking to solve a problem. You need people who think linearly, like programmers, holistically, like network managers, and tactically, like the operating systems. Additionally, all these various minds need to possess an element of sleuthfulness and cunning to solve some very complex challenges. It's a really fantastic opportunity."

Monday Attendance
During the month of September, it is important that Loudoun County Public Schools capture student daily attendance Monday – Friday to provide accurate attendance reports. Monday is an asynchronous day for middle and high school students; therefore, there will be no synchronous learning. In order to be counted present, your student must open a permission click link that will be sent to their LCPS email account on Monday, September 21 and respond to the three reflective questions prior to 1:00 pm on Monday. If they do not respond, your student will be counted absent on Monday. If you are also a parent of an elementary age student, attendance will be taken during their synchronous morning meeting. Thank you for helping us to capture your student’s attendance on Monday.
The PermissionClick form will consist of some general information (Name, Advisory teacher, etc.) and these three questions:
- What’s one thing that you felt successful with last week? Why do you think you were successful?
- What’s one thing that you want to accomplish this week? Why is that important to you?
- What is one thing that you want to get better at this week? What steps are you going to take to get better at it?
The student responses will be reviewed and distributed to the students' PRIDE TIME teachers.
Online Behavior
Last week, we addressed several things with the students regarding online behavior during morning announcements. We wanted to ask for your help in reiterating these messages with the students, as they are lessons that will serve them well in life outside of high school. Both messages had to do with respecting the school environment, even a virtual one.
Based on our experience this first week, there are a few students who are not clear on what is and what is not on topic or school-appropriate content or who choose to disregard these expectations. Although we will reinforce school expectations and help students fully understand the consequences of their actions, if you feel comfortable doing so, we would ask that in your conversations with your children, please discuss this topic. Knowing what behavior and language is appropriate given a particular situation (and what behavior and language is never appropriate) is a skill that our students need to know for life beyond Heritage.
Additionally, there have been students throughout Loudoun County who have been "crashing" into virtual classrooms to play loud music or make other distracting comments and noises. Heritage has not been immune from these interruptions, as some of your children may have experienced. We have asked our students to not share log-in information, including GoogleMeet codes/nicknames, with other students or anyone outside of the class. We also reminded them that those who shared the information can face consequences, just as those who are disrupting the learning of others would.
For the efforts of the great majority of our students who are trying their hardest to focus and learn in this environment, the Heritage High School staff are very appreciative. We are committed to supporting every one of our students and their learning, even if it means holding them accountable to reinforce the expectations outlined below.
Sincerely,
The Administration at Heritage High School
Behavior Expectations in Distance Learning
Student Interactions with Instructional Staff and other Students
- Students are expected to abide by the code of conduct in the Students Rights and Responsibilities and be good digital citizens.
- Students should address all LCPS staff members as adults with the courtesy expected for education professionals.
- Students should treat each other with respect.
- Students should phrase communications with LCPS staff in a polite and courteous manner appropriate for speaking to adults. The tone of emails, virtual classes, and phone conversations must be respectful.
- Students should communicate with teachers via email. If a student requests a Google Meet via email, parent or caregiver must be present for the virtual meeting. If a parent or caregiver cannot be present, the teacher will require an additional staff member be present. If a student is 18 years of age or older, a parent or caregiver is not required; an additional staff member should still be present.
- Students are prohibited from recording Google Meets.
- The integrity and authenticity of student work is something we take seriously and check using a variety of technologies. Copying the work of others, allowing others to knowingly copy a student’s work, and/or misusing content is prohibited.
- Students are not to use obscene, profane, threatening, or disrespectful language or images in any communications with other LCPS students. These actions are prohibited as indicated in Policy 8210 and may result in temporary removal from the virtual learning environment.
Possible Consequences
We cannot disclose consequences given to an individual student in a particular situation. However, it is important that students realize, even in a virtual environment, all normal disciplinary procedures for managing classroom behavior will be followed as stated in the Student Code of Conduct.
