Reading Community City School District | November 2020
District Five Year Forecast to be Presented
The district is in the process of finalizing it’s five-year forecast, to communicate and assess the financial health of the district. Five-year forecasts must be submitted to the Ohio Department of Education twice a year (May and November). A five-year forecast contains two components, historical and projected financial data along with notes to explain any significant changes or “assumptions” the District used to develop the reported financial projections.
There will be a presentation of the five-year forecast at the next regular scheduled Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, November 4. The Board of Education is expected to approve the five-year forecast November 18 for final submission.
Community Chats Continue and Go On-Line
Reading Superintendent Jason Enix and Treasurer Colette Lewis have been hosting a series of Community Chats. These have taken place in small, physically-distanced groups at locations around the community over the past several weeks to gather community feedback and share information about the district. Additional dates are available below, including Virtual Community Chats to allow for bigger crowds and more conversation.
Sign-up here.
Mr. Enix also hosted a series of one-on-one discussions with the community, making himself available from 7-11am and 12-2pm on Thursday, October 29 and again from 3-6pm on Sunday, November 1 for private conversations via Google Meet. And he is always willing to make himself available for further discussion.
Reading Students and Staff Celebrate Spirit Week
The week leading up to Halloween was Spirit Week throughout Reading Community City School District. With themes like Wacky-Tacky Day and Wear Your PJ’s for remote learning Wednesday, students and staff both got a chance to have some fun.
Blue Devil 5th Graders Getting Ready for Girls on the Run 5k
Nine Reading 5th grade girls are working hard to prepare for the Girls on the Run 5k. The event is coming up Sunday, November 15. The Girls on the Run event is not focused on speed or competition, but on having fun with fitness and encouraging others to do the same. The 5k is virtual this year, but still dedicated to the idea of helping girls become joyful, healthy and confident.
The Devil Depot Goes High Tech
The Devil Depot is adapting to new challenges, by going on-line. In the past, the rewards program included a “store on wheels” that went around the school during homeroom, allowing students to spend their Devil Dollars earned for meeting school expectations. To cut down on gatherings and handling of the reward items, some changes were needed. This year, the Devil Depot has been adapted to operate like an on-line store. Each Monday morning the on-line catalog is updated with the latest selection of items like snacks, stickers, school supplies and hand sanitizer. Students can fill out an order form, turn it in with their Devil Dollars, and await a delivery during Friday morning homeroom.
Ohio School Safety Center Contest
With the 2020-2021 school year underway, the Ohio School Safety Center is offering students a chance to be part of the statewide effort to let people know about the school safety tip line. The Safer Ohio School Tip Line can be accessed via text or phone call at 844-723-3764 and anonymous tips can be left about potential concerns.
Students in grades 6-8 and 9-12 are invited to create a video Public Service Announcement and contest winners will help create a professional quality version of their winning idea. The deadline to enter is December 18. Details on how to enter can be found here.
RHS Counselor Corner
Seniors planning to attend college next year need to fill out the FAFSA now! It's where you'll find federal grants, loans, and work-study funds available for college. The sooner you complete it, the more financial aid you may be eligible to receive. Start by visiting fafsa.ed.gov. Contact the Guidance Office if you have any questions.
Juniors, now would be the time to start looking at colleges you are interested in. Most all colleges have virtual tours and some are allowing campus visits. Consider taking the ACT or SAT as soon as possible.
Juniors and Seniors, check your email for information on virtual college meetings that are set up on Wednesdays. You can also contact Guidance for contact information on specific colleges.
Sophomores will be receiving information about the Great Oaks Schools in November and December. You may also see what they have to offer on their website (greatoaks.com) The application for programs opens in November. Simply go to the Great Oaks website (https://hs.greatoaks.com/apply/) and follow instructions for students wanting to apply. Our advice is to apply early because many programs fill quickly.
