AVID Monthly
March 16, 2022
Dear AVID Families,
We did it! We made it to March and through the stress, prepping, and planning for the ACT with AVID 11s and the PreACT with AVID 10s. I want to take a minute to tell you how proud I am of the hard work the AVID 11s put into to preparing for this very important test. I knew they all wanted to see gains from their scores in October. You could feel it in the room as we worked through practice tests and strategies for success!
I wish everyone a happy and safe spring break. Use the time to rejuvenate and enjoy quality family time together. The 2021-2022 school year is almost over. Wow, where did the time go?

AVID 9 Overview: Adria Braley Jaeggi
In Term 3, AVID 9 has been reading Touching Spirit Bear, a novel that tells the story of a teenage boy, Cole, who broke into a hardware store and severely hurt Peter, a schoolmate who learned about Cole's break-in and reported it to the authorities. This isn't the first time Cole has been in trouble with the law. Instead of getting sent to a detention center, the judge decides to allow Cole the opportunity to participate in a Circle Justice program in which he is to stay on a remote island in isolation for one year while reflecting on his actions, his past, and his future. Throughout the novel, Cole wrestles with anger about his circumstances on the island and in his life and tries to work through the events and emotions that brought him to this point. A white bear living near Cole's camp might just be able to help Cole see how everything and everyone in life can be connected, even if Cole must endure some hardships before learning this lesson.
In class, we are using this novel to expand our academic vocabulary, further extend our close reading skills, and apply our note-taking practices to a fictional literary work. Students have been responsible for taking an additional set of focused notes on every four chapters in which they outline the main events and details of the story. At several points, we have engaged in seminar-style conversations about the characters, events, and themes in order to support students' ability to engage in critical dialogue with one another, and this novel will serve as a great starting point for Term 4's unit focused on the genre of narrative writing. It has been great to see students' reading and collaboration skills grow throughout this unit!
