Play, Learn, and Grow in 4K

Literacy

This week we began reading fairy tales. We started off with Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Over the next few weeks we will read Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. During our reading we will focus on listening for Who is in the story, Where the story takes place, and What happened in the story. Below I posted a few examples of journal entries the children made for retelling an event from the story. Our goal is for the kids to draw a picture that represents the story and then dictate to a teacher what the picture is about. You can see that some children are even labeling the beginning sound of images in their pictures and some are even experimenting with writing words. Our little learners are doing such a great work!

Math

Last week we wrapped up our unit on non-standard measurement and now we are on to learning numerals 1-10 and counting. Our small groups will focus on counting out quantities 1-10 with one-to-one correspondence and then matching those quantities to numerals. The children are learning that the symbol (1,2,3...) represents an amount. We discussed counting slow and using our fingers to touch each object as we count. This week we put number cards in order from 1-10 and then counted out pom-poms to count out the amount. The children also went on a number hunt around the room for numbers 1-20. We are doing so well with knowing our numbers 1-10, I thought we might as well start practicing our teen numbers!

Volunteer in the Classroom

I have shared a link below to the classroom volunteer calendar. Assisting in the classroom is a great way to get involved and to learn what your child's school day is like. You can choose to stay for the whole class session or if it works better for your schedule you can just stop by to be a special story time reader. While in the classroom I may have a special project for you or I may just have you interacting and playing with the kids. Please sign up for a date and time that works best for you.

4K Volunteer Schedule

Before your first time volunteering you have to complete a background check with the school district. Here is a link for the background check:

I look forward to and appreciate any time you can share!
