J. W. Leary Junior High School
May 16, 2022
Hello Everyone!
It was wonderful to see so many parents/guardians at the concert on Thursday. It was amazing to hear the kids performing together. I know from talking with them after it was exciting for them and something they enjoyed; especially in a really full auditorium.
This past week we also had a virtual assembly on anti-bullying/cyberbullying. More details are shared below.
With the warm weather it is important that we all have the same understanding of the school guidelines outlined in the Student Handbook. The guidelines follow the associated items from Board of Education Policy relating to our Code of Conduct.
Keep your eyes open for our annual plant sale. The plant sale is a collaboration between student council and the Green Team!
With the Field Experience trip, children who are not attending will have enrichment activities on Thursday and Friday.

JH Ensembles are getting ready for concerts. Instrumental concert is Wednesday May 18 at 7:30 pm!
This past week we had an amazing chorus concert!
I want you to know how much I appreciate all of you for your support with the concert. It was a tough year with the way COVID impacted everything. There was nothing more special than seeing everyone in the auditorium to celebrate the talent within the school!
The children were amazing in adjusting and working together to put on this amazing show.
- Mr. Brady and the Board of Education for working with us to provide a live presentation
- Mrs. Robideau who worked to prepare the children;
- Miss. Fountaine for playing the piano;
- Mr. Lincoln and family for running the lights and the sound;
- Mr. Oliver for setting up the auditorium and giving us access ahead of the show;
- Mr. Corigliano and Mrs. Walton for their special effects during the 7th-grade show;
- The custodial staff at the High School for their adaptation and for helping with setup;
- you for supporting your children through this unique time;
- and to your children--they sounded amazing. I am so proud of their brave spirits for adjusting to being on stage (which was scary!) and their outstanding performance.
Native American Spring Social
Thank you Ms. Jocko for organizing this event. It was fantastic to see the leadership among our Native children with this event and the acceptance among all of our children!

STUDENT DRESS CODE
All students are expected to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to dress appropriately for school and school functions. This should be considered the student’s work place and students should dress accordingly. Attire should not be offensive, provocative, outlandish, or distracting to the school environment. Attire that interferes with the educational process or impinges upon the rights of others will not be tolerated. Clothing and hair styles shall be neat and clean. The school expects reasonable personal hygiene practices to be followed. The administration will determine what is or is not appropriate and is authorized to take action in instances where an individual’s dress does not meet these stated requirements.
The Massena Central School District recommends a mode of dress based upon common sense, good taste, current styles and the concern for the best interest of the entire student body, as well as, the individual. To that end, a student’s dress, grooming and appearance, including hair style/color, jewelry, make-up and nails, shall:
- Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process.
- Recognize that extremely brief garments such as tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, mesh shirts, muscle shirts, midriff shirts, plunging necklines (front and/or back) see through garments, shorts or skirts above mid-thigh, and jeans with holes are not appropriate (with arms at one’s sides, fingertips are considered mid-thigh). Tank tops must have straps that are at least 2 inches wide and fitted sleeves.
- Ensure that underwear is completely covered with outer clothing. This would include such items as bras, bathing suits, halter tops, or tank tops if worn underneath outer clothing.
- Include footwear at all times. Footwear that is a safety hazard will not be allowed. Appropriate footwear for Physical Education and Technology class are required.
- Not include hats of any style other than in the corridor. Hoods must remain down at all times. Bandanas of any kind are not allowed in the building.
- Not include items that are distracting or offensive, vulgar, make sexual reference, or degrade others on account of race, religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
- Not include any clothing that advertises alcohol, other substances, tobacco, or illegal drugs and/or encourages other illegal and violent activities.
- Not include chains, sharp dog collars, or bracelets or anything that could cause injury.
- Not include baggy or sagging pants (waistband must rest on the top of the hip bones).
- Not include sunglasses.
- Not include pajamas
- Not include coats or jackets during the school day. Hooded sweatshirts are not considered outerwear
CELL PHONE /PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY
- Cell phone and personal electronics use is prohibited in the school building and on school provided transportation.
- Cell phones and personal electronics will be considered as in use if they are “on” or are in sight.
- Use of cell phones and personal electronics in the school building or school transportation will result in them being confiscated, and may result in further disciplinary action. Confiscated cell phones and personal electronics will be returned to the student’s parent or guardian.
- The only exception to this rule is if teachers are utilizing cell phones or personal electronics for an educational purpose in the classroom.
- Massena Central School will assume no responsibility for lost, stolen or broken cell phones and personal electronics after they have been confiscated.
- Due to time constraints, the school will not investigate stolen cell phones and personal electronics. Their security is the sole responsibility of the student.
Enforcement of the Personal Electronics Policy is found in the JW Leary Personal Electronics Plan which reads as follows:
- If the item is visible to a staff member they will request that the item be turned in to them and the item will be taken to the office. The office will document that the student was seen with an item and it was taken.
- On the first offense, the infraction is logged in the office and the personal electronic item is returned to the student at the end of the day.
- On the second offense, the item is taken and turned into the office and is not returned to the student. It must be picked up by a parent or someone in parental relation to the student. Exceptions can be made only by the principal in communication with the student's parent
B. If the item is out and in use, the student will begin at (ii) above.
C. It is also worth noting that students are expected to turn the item over to staff without a conversation or question. If the student becomes insubordinate and refuses to follow a reasonable request from a staff member they will be subject to the code of conduct for those behaviors.

Great job students and staff!
Over 50 students have received notes home outlining their positive contributions to our school community.
The form to nominate those going above and beyond is on our website or located here!
Something is concerning-
If people see/hear something, say something. Situations we have heard of we have handled.
The below form which is also linked on our website is one way to do that.
All concerns expressed to the school are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action is taken. We cannot do something if we do not know about it. It is a service to the entire community when items are shared.
We are all in this together and we all have the same goal. Thank you for your support!
Breakfast/Lunch
Doors open at 7:15 am for children getting breakfast. Please see this VIDEO for information about breakfast.
Children do need their Schoolbucks account number to get breakfast and lunch.
This links to the current breakfast/lunch menu!
A big thank you to our amazing cafeteria staff who helps this to be possible!
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help your student or your family. We have so many great things happening at school.
If you have ideas, questions, or concerns please email azullo@mcs.k12.ny.us or call the school 315-764-3720.
