Oakland Orbit - Family Edition

1.13.23

Dear Oakland Families,

Happy 2023! It was so wonderful to have our students back with us this week! We have a number of events coming up in the next couple of months, please be sure to check them out below.

As a reminder, there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 16th for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. We will see our students back here on Tuesday, January 17th.

Please make sure that your child is coming to school ready for the cold weather! It is a good idea to put their name inside of coats, hats, and sweatshirts so that if they are found, they can be returned to them.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Adams - Principal

Lindsay Burns - Assistant Principal

NWEA MAP Assessment

Our Winter NWEA MAP Assessments will begin next week. All students will take a reading and a math assessment in the next couple of weeks. These assessments help our staff to make instructional decisions in how to best meet the needs of our students.

These tests are adaptive, meaning as your child selects an answer to a question, the next level of question is determined based upon the answer they give. This helps us to individually pinpoint the strengths of students and the areas that they could use additional support.

Your chid's teacher will let you know when their class is taking their assessments. Please make sure that your child gets a good night's rest the night before and a good breakfast in the morning. We are so excited to see how much our students have grown since the start of the year!

Oakland Boosters

OAKLAND EAGLE BOOSTERS NEWS

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Jersey Mike’s restaurant days! It was a great success!

We also want to thank all of you for your monetary support. Due to your generosity, we were able to host a pasta and salad lunch from Rosati’s for the Oakland Staff. See our Facebook page for pictures!

Every act of support and bit of monetary support keeps our non-profit, volunteer-run organization alive. This allows us to support Oakland Elementary’s students and staff as best we can. Thank you again!

OAKLAND AQUILA

The Oakland Eagle Boosters have adopted a star for the students at Oakland Elementary School and presented it to them at the December student assembly. The star is named Oakland Aquila. Aquila means "Eagle" in Latin.

This is a very special treasure that will be theirs to enjoy for a lifetime!

Follow this link for the “star hopping” instructions to find the star in the sky!

WHY BE AN OAKLAND EAGLE BOOSTER?

Everyone - parents, educators, students, and other citizens active in their schools and communities - is invited to join our not-for-profit parent association.

The number one reason to join the Boosters is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help your school.

Get Connected
There is no better way to know what’s happening in your school.
Tap into a Network
Booster functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, building rapport and discussing issues that are on your mind. You can share ideas, concerns, and experiences.
Watch Yourself Grow
By volunteering with your Boosters, you put your skills and hobbies to use for a noble cause - your child and all children in the community.
Speak Up
Boosters can be a way for you to more effectively suggest change at your child’s school.
Witness Improvement
By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping make positive changes. Local Boosters/PTAs/PTOs play an important role by supporting the goals of the district, school and individual classrooms.
Be a Role Model
By becoming a Booster member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education.

Personal Items at School

As we are returning to school after the holiday season, please remind your child that they should not be bringing personal items (toys, electronics, etc.) to school unless their teacher has indicated that they are able to do so. We do not want their items to be lost. Thank you for helping us to keep our learning environment focused on learning and free from the distraction of toys.

Note from the Nurse

With the winter season upon us, sickness is on the rise. A few reminders to help you decide if you should send your child to school or not:

  • Students must be fever free without medication for 24 hours to attend school
  • Students must not have been vomiting or have diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school after illness
  • If your child is visibly sick, even without a fever, please do not send them as it is often quite difficult for them to make it through the day

Thank you for your help in keeping everyone healthy!

iPad Information

Parent reminders regarding the new iPads:

  • If there is an issue or an item is not working, please contact your building administrator to get a replacement as soon as possible.

  • Please help with the expectation of having the iPad charged once the student comes to school. It is very important that the student has a charged iPad so that class and instruction time isn’t lost accomplishing this task.

  • Please remind your student that the iPads are for school use, not personal use. They should not be used for taking personal pictures outside of school.

  • The iPads should be used for school-related work at home, not watching YouTube videos. YouTube can be a valuable educational tool when used appropriately. Please help us monitor this tool so that we can continue to utilize the value of it and not have the negative aspects.

The staff at Antioch CCSD 34 thank you for your continued support regarding the iPads and their value in enhancing the learning of your student. Please reach out to jcoon@antioch34.com with any questions or concerns.

Apple ID Password

The Technology Department has seen an increase in students’ iPads requiring the Apple ID password to be entered due to updates occurring. Please don’t allow students to click cancel or instruct students to click cancel. This password can affect future updates as well as other features on the iPads. All students’ Apple ID passwords can be found on PowerSchool under other school information on the PowerSchool parent portal.
