Aaron Reynolds Author Visit

Preorders are now closed but you can order books from other sources and send them in by Friday, Feb. 23 to be signed.

We will still have some copies of one of the titles--Creepy Pair of Underwear--available for purchase from the bookfair. At this point any of the rest you would need to order from other sources since our preorders are closed.

As noted on the preorder form, please still send in a form with the desired inscriptions clearly printed.

First Grade Animal Research

First grade spent a lot of time over the past couple of weeks researching animals before their zoo field trip. They used Pebble Go and print sources to learn about things like animal habitat, prey and predators, life cycles, and interesting facts. They also made sure to give credit to their information sources as a way of saying thank you for sharing information!

Third Grade Rapid Changes to the Earth's Surface

Third grade spent some time researching rapid changes to the earth's surface ... otherwise known as natural disasters! They learned where and when they are likely to occur, what happens during such an event, how to prepare, and some of what happens during clean up and recovery.

They used apps like Pic Collage for Kids, ChatterPix, DoInk green screen, and ShadowPuppet to publish their work! They also made sure to credit their information sources and photo sources because all of those are owned by someone else. We can't call them up and ask for their permission because then they'd never get any more work done but we CAN say "thank you" by stating the title and author on a works cited section.

Second Grade Research is coming up!

Does your student know how to log in to Launchpad? We'll be basing a lot of our research from there. Many of the classes are learning about famous people from history but one or two may branch out into Olympic athletes. We're still deciding. ;)

Overdue Books

We do have 415 overdue books out right now. This is mentioned that only because we want kids to be able to get NEW books every week ... and can only do that if they're keeping track of the books they already have. We've got kids waiting on books they can't check out because someone already has them sitting under a bed or couch!

PreK-grade 2 usually get 2 books every week.

Grades 3-5 usually get 3 books every 2 weeks. They can come in on their own during recess or after finishing work on a pass in between that time (and I love it when they do because that's when often when I can actually discuss their reading choices as opposed to the large group visits when it's more about making sure the checkout system is working!) but they come with their classes every 2 weeks.

If you're even not sure you can contact the librarian about a student's account or login to Launchpad and go to the Destiny icon (ie the BLACK TREE link on the Library Resources) and find your student's checkout materials listed there.

Over spring break students with clear (no overdues) accounts will get 1 extra book to make sure they have plenty to read over the vacation.

There is always the electronic library to add to reading possibilities!

Big picture

The PAWS for Books Bookfair

is coming the third week of February.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! That sign up link is currently active right here. They promised they have fixed the issue where trying to open the link on a mobile phone would often be problematic. If it ever pops up again just send Ms. O a message with the day and time you can come and she'll enter you manually. We'll set up on Fri. the 16th (that is an early out day for the students so be aware of that ... if anyone can come we'll try to start around 12!) and then the fair will run Monday the 19th through Thursday the 22 from 8:20-3:30 and then on Friday from 8:20 to 12. We'll close at 12 that day to be ready for a "club" afternoon for grades 3-5 at 1:30.

Shopping the bookfair online will be available Feb 11-24. Orders made from the 11-18 will be delivered during the week of the bookfair and then orders made from the 19-23 will be sent after the bookfair. Having two deliveries of online orders is new! Usually all online orders would come after the bookfair closed.

A Wrinkle in Time comes out on March 9!

On Thursday and Friday mornings we listen to the audiobook version of this title because, as always, it's best to READ THE BOOK before seeing the movie. This book was first published in 1962! There is bound to be quite a few changes between the two so it's a great opportunity for comparison and contrast.

A head's up if you read it together at home as a family ... the beginning is a little bit slow. They have to build the world and introduce the characters. But then the action picks up! So don't give up! This is an upper level independent read and really interest level read as well. Some of the action in the movie is probably a little intense for younger kids. I believe the movie will be rated PG.

Sgt. Stubby comes out in early April

But he's based in historical fact and there are several books about him!

We have one called Stubby the War Dog: The True Story of World War I's Bravest Dog by Ann Bausum.

There's one on Overdrive called Stubby by Kate Klimo. That one you can check out on your device from your couch!

Then of course there are other titles you might find at the public library.

With Electronic Library Resources Students Could ALWAYS Have FIVE EXTRA BOOKS!

Access to electronic resources has changed a bit this year. This can be accessed from the top right of the main NEISD page or from the library webpage.
