Since it's the month of love, and we love all of you..
Enrichment Program at SBSB
We feel it is our duty to give your child the best learning foundation we possibly can, to set your child on a path of success and give them a thirst for knowledge. One of the most important things we can teach, as early childhood teachers, is a desire to ask more.
Following this philosophy, we are rolling out our new program, beginning Monday, February 8th.
The program will include the following:
Music- A weekly program that will include music and movement. We will provide musical instruments, and a rhythm lesson.
The Benefits of Music
Music ignites all areas of child development: intellectual, social and emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. For children and adults, music helps strengthen memory skills.
Art- A weekly art lesson that will include a lesson about a famous/influential artist. The children will learn about an artist, and then will have the chance to create their own masterpiece that is inspired by this artist...but with their own personal twist.
Decision Making: According to a report by Americans for the Arts, art education strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The experience of making decisions and choices in the course of creating art carries over into other parts of life. “If they are exploring and thinking and experimenting and trying new ideas, then creativity has a chance to blossom,” says MaryAnn Kohl, an arts educator and author of numerous books about children’s art education.
Science- This will be a weekly science experiment, age appropriate and tailored to the world around our students.
Fostering Scientific Thinking
One of the primary goals of the early childhood science curriculum is the development of scientific thinking in young children. Scientific thinking differs from the learning of scientific facts in that scientific thinking involves children in the process of finding out. Instead of learning what other people have discovered, scientific thinking leads children to make their own discoveries. Scientific thinking is manifest as young children ask questions, conduct investigations, collect data, and search for answers. Scientific thinking is evident, for example, when Jake puts one snowball in an empty bucket while he puts another snowball of about the same size in the water table. “I want to see which one lasts the longest,” he says.
And lastly:
Yoga- This will be a weekly yoga session, geared towards teaching the students how to self soothe, take deep breaths, and keep a sunny attitude.
It Boosts Self-Esteem and Confidence Yoga helps to instill confidence and to bring learning to children on an experiential level, Enneking says. "It helps to provide building blocks for the future. It is our responsibility to develop our children's sense of wonder and to give them a strong sense of self so they know where they belong in this world and can contribute to making their community a better place." Yoga teaches them to persevere, be patient, and work toward their goals. A yoga teacher can only offer guidance; it is the child who has to work to succeed. Therefore, when a child masters a pose, it gives him confidence and self-esteem. Enneking often describes kids' yoga as "prehabilitation," a proactive action to ward off instability or sickness; yoga also provides tools for practicing compassion, mindfulness, generosity, focus, strength, and flexibility.
The program will run on a weekly schedule as follows:
Monday-Music
Tuesday-Art
Wednesday-Science
Thursday-Gymnastics is offered
Friday-Yoga
