I can be compassionate towards all students and adults in my school, when I see them in need.
I can be compassionate by being kind to others.
I can be compassionate by saying nice to words to others who are feeling sad.

Math: Unit 4: In this unit, students develop their understanding of two-dimensional shapes. They start by describing and classifying basic shapes by their attributes. As the unit develops, students learn to model and compose shapes. Finally they will join simple shapes to form larger more complex shapes. In Science, we will learn about the purpose of weather forecasting to prepare for, and respond to, severe weather. In Health, we will learn about the Family Team.
We will identify what a family is, family rules and jobs, and families and the community. In Social Studies this month, we will be exploring Holidays Around the World. This week we will be learning about the holiday of Diwali and we will be making a craft. We will also learn about the celebrations of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Los Posados over the next few weeks.
First Grade
We encourage math games with something as simple as playing cards to practice addition and subtraction. You can also make up word problems in your everyday tasks to show them how they use math in everyday life. (We have 2 bananas at home, but we need 8. How many do we need to buy at the grocery store?)
We will be starting measurement and time very soon so we encourage you getting them familiar with an analog clock. In social studies we are talking about culture and traditions. If you would like to share something about your culture or a special tradition please contact your child's teacher. We will be discussing different holidays, foods, music, etc.. in different cultures. We will also relate it to different winter holidays that families may celebrate. Don't forget iReady or Lexia and Dreambox for reading and math practice. As always, please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions. We wish you a wonderful holiday season!
2nd Grade
Third Grade
In math, we just completed Unit 3 on multiplication and took our 1st math benchmark. The students worked really hard during benchmark testing. I will be sending a letter home detailing an incentive for learning multiplication facts very shortly. These weekly fact tests will take place every Friday. Unit 4 is a unit on Geometry. The students will be learning the attributes of various shapes as well as finding the perimeter of shapes.
For science, the students are going to be focusing on the different climate zones and studying the temperatures and animals of those zones. In reading, the students will begin a informational text unit where they will read and analyze poetry. They will also write a blog post after analzying a story. The 3rd grade team wishes each and every one of you a Happy and Healthy Holiday season:)
4th Grade
Please also ensure that you are dressing your students appropriately for the weather. Students must still adhere to the uniform policy. In Health this month, we will focus on the digestive system and what helps/hinders that process. In math, we will wrap up whole number division and begin learning with decimals. In social studies, students will explore Maryland before and after European colonization through a series of videos, readings, etc.
In science, we will finish the module on "Earth and Human Activity" by looking closely and natural resources and their impact. In reading, students will read a variety of informational texts and apply various reading comprehension strategies such as questioning, text and graphic features, etc. The 4th grade team is grateful to partner with you all and wishes you the happiest of holidays!
5th Grade
Tests are not always on Friday; please refer to your child's agenda book to see the list of words and test dates. Reading homework expectations have been adjusted for the second quarter.
Each week, students will continue to receive a writing choice board, and they are expected to complete 2 prompts - they may complete additional prompts for extra credit points if they wish. In lieu of the reading log we began the year with, students are expected to complete 2 lessons per week on iReady. As with writing, they may complete additional lessons for extra credits points if they wish. These completed lessons are essential to small group instruction in the classroom, as the data allows me to tailor instruction to your child's specific needs. In math, we will continue to be working with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. It is imperative students know their basic math facts. For Dreambox, I acknowledge our weekly *stars * of 10 or more lessons. Keep up the great work. In social studies, we will be learning about the Proclamation of 1763.
Through a variety of class discussions, research, and written responses, students will immerse themselves in the history of the time period. In science, we will be completing a group project researching the various biomes (desert, rain forest, tundra, Great Barrier Reef, and ?) and how the four spheres work together in each biome to sustain life. Some sections of this project will be expected to be completed as homework in order to be prepared for class. Please continue to check your child's agenda book often for specific expectations and due dates.
As always, thank you for your support. We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season, and a restful winter break. See you in the new year! - The Fifth Grade Team
