SCHLEGEL SAFARI
FEBRUARY 2019
A letter from your Principals!
Schlegel Families,
We hope you are enjoying the winter season. Of course, you know how much fun winter can be for all of us. Students have enjoyed some great days playing in the snow along with spending time inside on those extreme, chilly days playing in the classrooms. As you walk through the hallways, the building is filled with beautiful displays of your children's work. We are proud of the way students and teachers show their learning throughout the school.
Our school participated in the ReadBowl during the months of January and February. We received two awards! The first was for Mrs. Winderl's class who had the most reading minutes in New York State at the primary level. The second was for Mr. Pittman's class who had the most reading minutes in New York State in the Elementary School category. We all had a great deal of fun. A special thanks to Miss Palmer, our librarian, for getting us involved in this wonderful literacy experience. Check out the website with your child to learn more-click here.
By now, you should have been able to review your child's report card on the Parent Portal. The Parent Portal is found on the websterschools website. Please take the time to review the report card. If you have any questions, we encourage you to call your child's teacher. Every Schlegel teacher takes pride in communicating with families. Always remember, we are just a phone call away:)!
We also ask you to check your calendar to make sure you have your child's parent conference date and time noted. Parent conferences take place on the half days in March. Of course, the Schlegel teachers meet before and after school during that week as well to accommodate parent schedules. Many teachers encourage families to bring their child to the conference. By having students talk about their progress and goals, we are setting the expectation of students taking ownership for their learning-even our kindergarten students. If you need time with just your child's teacher, just let the teacher know. We recognize the importance of engaging in just for grown-ups conversations too!
Would you please do a favor for us? Please be sure to encourage family and friends who have kindergarten eligible children to join us on Tuesday, February 26 from 6:30-7:30 to learn about the Webster Kindergarten program and register their child. This helps us out as we plan for the number of kindergarten classes we will have in the fall.
With smiles,
Francine Leggett & Robin Jennings

Keys to Communicating with Your Child
Good communication between you and your child is important for developing a positive relationship. As your child gets older, good communication will make it easier for you to talk to him about more challenging topics, so it is a good idea to start early.
Praise your child when she does something right. The more you praise a behavior, the more likely it is your child will behave the same way again.
Pay attention to your child when he is talking to you or trying to communicate with you. Giving him your full attention will help you understand what he is telling you. It will also make him feel like you care about what he has to say.
Set aside time each day to talk and play with your child. Creating a special time lets your child know she is important. It also strengthens the bond between the two of you.
Remember - Confidential support is always available for your child(ren) to assist through transitions of any kind. In addition, we can help in finding support for community resources your family may need. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Reminders:
If your child is in K, 1st, 3rd, or 5th and received a reminder to send in an update Physical exam, please get those copies into the health office in the next week or two. If updated physicals are not received, your child will be scheduled for a physical exam with the District’s Physician in March.
If your child is in the 2nd or 4th grade and has had a Physical exam this 2018-19 school year, feel free to send in a copy now, as they will be needed next year.
Call the attendance line (265-2513) if you child is ill or if you will be out of town. If your child has seen a doctor and is diagnosed with a communicable disease (Scarlet Fever/Strep throat, hand-foot-mouth, RSV, the Flu, pink eye, Fifth disease, Impetigo, Lice, etc.) please include this in your message on the attendance line as we need to track these diseases
Students suspected of having Pertussis should not attend school until lab test results come back negative, or for positive results, the student has completed the entire course of antibiotics and has been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the assistance of fever-reducing medication.
Pertussis most often occurs in infants and younger children who frequently acquire the disease from older siblings, adolescents, and adults who have a mild disease. While Pertussis most frequently occurs in unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children, it also occurs in school-age children and adults who have had the recommended Pertussis immunizations.

Webster CSD Hosts NEW Empire Justice Center’s Families of Color Meeting
Webster Central School District (WCSD) is excited to announce the formation of the district’s Families of Color group. This new group is an extension of the established Empire Justice Center’s Families of Color program. The Families of Color group’s mission is to bring together a strong collective of parents, concerned family members, and allies passionate about building a racially- and economically-just community for children in WCSD. The intent in forming this group is to meet regularly and share insights into our children’s school experiences, provide social support, and establish meaningful connections with one another. In order to ensure this group is welcoming to all families in WCSD, including families of color, individuals with disabilities, immigrants, LGBTQ people, and people of different religious backgrounds, we choose to leave racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and other “isms” at the door. By coming together, the newly formed Families of Color group will form a supportive team that allows us to lean on and learn from each other, and advocate for any changes we want to see in our local schools and community. The first meeting is Monday, March 4, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Webster Town Library’s community room, 980 Ridge Road, Webster, NY. The children's librarians will be planning activities for children during this meeting. If you would like to have your child participate, please email Terry McCarthy, WCSD director of humanities and district liaison to the Families of Color group, at terrance_mccarthy@webstercsd.org to reserve a spot. We look forward to sharing this group experience with you!
Infinite Campus & Student Portal Information
As a reminder, WCSD uses the Infinite Campus Parent & Student Portal Messenger system to send important emails, phone calls, and texts throughout the year, including school closings. Please note that your carrier’s message and data rates may apply if you choose the optional text option. Parents may update email information for their child(ren) through the portal by clicking on the Contact Preferences tab. The tab enables parents to decide the ways they receive important school and district messages and the types of messages they wish to receive. Any changes to existing Parent & Student Portal home address or phone numbers must be made by contacting your school’s administrative offices.
Individuals who need their IC activation code of who have questions should contact ICPortal@webstercsd.org.
