Message From Principal Webb
Hello families-
First, I hope everyone is doing well. This Smore issue is full of resources and information for the district and our community on COVID-19 and an update from PTA.
Please reach out if you need anything or have questions. There are some important resources linked below. I will miss seeing all of our Longhorns in the upcoming weeks but hope everyone takes care of themselves and we will see everyone in a few weeks!

Picking up student medications
We understand that students may have medications in our buildings, which they will need while schools are closed. Student guardians (i.e. parents, guardians and emergency contacts listed in PowerSchool) will be allowed access to school buildings on Monday, March 23, 2 - 4 pm and Tuesday, March 24, 8 - 10 am to retrieve student medication(s). Building access will not be granted for any other purpose.
Nutrition
Student Nutrition
Our students' health and nutrition are the focus of our school community during this critical time. During the school closure, the District is committed to providing meals to our students. The District, through the Nutrition Services Department, is establishing drive through or walk up meal pick up locations at a number of District school sites. Per USDA federal guidelines, children must be present in order for meals to be provided.
The following schools will provide both lunch for the day and breakfast for the following day. Meals will be distributed between 11 am and 1 pm. Please stay in your car and wait for the meals to be brought to your vehicle and passed through the window. You will be given a number of meals based on the number of children in the car ages 1-18.
Meal Pick-up Sites:
City High School
Hills Elementary School
North Central Junior High School
Northwest Junior High School
Twain Elementary School
West High School
Wood Elementary School
In addition, we will also have meal pick-up sites available in the following areas:
Breckenridge Mobile Home Park
Cole/Thatcher Mobile Home Park
Lakeridge Mobile Home Park
Regency Mobile Home Park
This program will be solely for pick-up of meals and meals will not be consumed on-site. We encourage families to continue to be proactive in reducing the risk of COVID-19 by not congregating at the school site once meals have been distributed, continue to wash hands often, sneeze or cough into a tissue or your elbow, and stay home if you are sick. Meals are intended for immediate consumption and should be stored/refrigerated as needed. Additional resources for food assistance can be found through the United Way of Johnson County.

The Latest News from the Longfellow PTA:
Happy Spring Break, Longhorns!
I hope you’re all staying healthy and enjoying this time with your family!
I wanted to reach out to you regarding the Longfellow silent & service auction. We WILL hold the online silent & service auction – it will just be delayed a little bit. We will make a plan once we know more about timing and when the kids will return to school.
This year the auction will be completely online! That includes all bids and payments. All items won will have arrangements made to be dropped off (at school/home) or mailed (for out of state). More information and the link will come later in April.
Right now we are furiously working to finish collecting our generous vendor donations. In addition, we are asking you for your service donations for our service auction! These can be any service you would like to offer to the community. It could be running errands for a day or petsitting for a weekend. You could offer free childcare for a night or a tray of goodies. Other popular donations from the past have been repair services, a meal made/delivered to your house, garden goodies or flowers delivered (in the summer). Do you enjoy sports? Offer lessons in soccer, baseball, volleyball, or golf. Are you a crafter? Offer lessons in sewing, crocheting, knitting, or painting. Do you make authentic cultural food? Offer lessons or a meal for a family. The service auction is all about offering our talents and connecting with others in our Longfellow community.
To donate to the service and/or silent auction, please contact Janeen Van Etten at janeenmk@yahoo.com.
If you would like to donate something to the silent/service auction, you may also consider purchasing a gift certificate from a local small business and donating it to the silent auction. In this time where we are protecting our community by staying home, our small businesses are going to suffer. Consider supporting our local small businesses who support Longfellow! Examples of those small businesses who have supported Longfellow in the past are as follows: DeLuxe Bakery, Home Ec Workshop, Big Picture Gallery & Studio, 2 Dogs Pub, AirFx, Planet 3, SkyZone, Bounce Party Supplies, Bowman Chiropractic Associates, Day Dream Comics, Encounter Café, Englert Theater, Every Bloomin Thing, Fin & Feather, Groovy Katz Salon & Spa, Cookies & More, Hands Jewelers, Haunted Book Shop, Heartland Yoga, Heyn’s Ice Cream, Hills Bank, Hobby Corner, Kathy’s Pies, Hudson’s Tap, Iowa Gym Nest, Kidworks & Houseworks, Stuff Etc., Leaf Kitchen, Leash on Life, Mexico Lindo, Film Scene, Molly’s Cupcakes, Millstream Brewing Company, Monica’s Bistro, Old Creamery Theatre, Playtime Poppy, Prairie Lights Bookstore, Raygun, Renee’s Ceramics, Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, rsvp, Silver Spider, The Knitting Shoppe, Theatre Cedar Rapids, Sno Biz, The Mill, World of Bikes. I’m sure there are others so please let me know if I missed someone! It was not intentional. I will add them in future emails.
We are very fortunate to have so many generous small businesses in our community. Let’s do our part to help them during this time!
To donate to the service and/or silent auction, please contact Janeen Van Etten at janeenmk@yahoo.com.
Thanks so much!
Janeen
volunteer opportunties
Many of our students and school district families will be facing significant challenges in the coming days. If you would like to help as we explore ways to provide educational opportunities and resources for our District families, please visit the ICCSD Foundation’s website for support. While we appreciate the offers that we have been receiving as far as volunteer efforts, we would ask all individuals to stay away from our buildings and lunch/breakfast distribution sites. For needs that are outside of the District’s areas of influence, and would be best served by social service agency partners, please visit the United Way's Community Disaster Relief Fund donation page.

latest district communication
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve and many individuals have questions that we cannot necessarily answer through our daily communications. We have been capturing these questions and organizing them on our COVID-19 resource webpage (www.IowaCitySchools.org/COVID19). This is an unprecedented time in our District, our community, our state, and our country. As we plan for schools being closed through April 12, please know the District’s priority is our students and staff. Your health and your family’s health are most important. This includes not only your physical health but also mental well-being during these difficult times. We highly encourage everyone to follow the recommendations that are being provided by Governor Kim Reynolds and other state and national organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Iowa Department of Public Health, and Johnson County Public Health.
