The Dangerous Road

The Road

Survival

The story of The Road starts with the characters found in a post-apocalyptic world. There isn't much food or water. And the last humans alive are killing each other for food or that they will be food. The two main characters are a father and son. These two characters are in a world fraught with danger and they must survive the perils of other humans and the shortage of basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.

"He cocked the pistol and held it on the man and the man stood with one hand out at his side, the dirty crumpled paintmask that he wore sucking in and out." pg 62 The Road. Here you see the perils of the post-apocalyptic world. This man had tried to kill the boy (the son) with a knife. But the dad was able to shoot the man.

"An hour later they were on the road. He pushed the cart and both he and the boy carried knapsacks" pg 5 The Road. This shows the state of living the father and son are in. They live in a tent covered by a rain tarp. All the food and water they have are kept in a little shopping cart and two knapsacks.

A tale of survival in a world where no hope is left

Summary of Main Characters and Major Events.

The Road is a different story in that you don't know much about the characters. You don't know their names, where they come from, or where they are going. All you are told is that there are two main characters. They are in a post-apocalyptic world, and life as we know it is gone. The boy is about 8 to 10 and the father about 35 to 40. The father flashes through his life now and then and that is where you see how this story started. There was a family of three a mother, a father, and a young son. Then the apocalypse. The family, living up north gets the worst of it. Blizzards and endless snowstorms. They burn their furniture as firewood. Then one day the mother walks out of the house and into the storm. She dies. Then flash forwards a few years and you find the dad and the son travelling on this dusty barren road. The only trace of civilization carrying this father and son duo to the south. On their travels on the road, they will encounter perils that no human should endure. As the other humans lose their humanity and kill and eat each other, as the father puts it, these two carry the flame. Carry the flame of hope, courage, and humanity.
