Coming Next Week...
GRAMMAR
We continue to work with your child in authentic ways to identify where they need to "grow". We look at journal entries, your child's writing, and other pieces of work to identify what grammar skills we can help your child with.
We are specifically working on deepening your child's understanding and use of the parts of speech. For example, your child may be able to identify a noun and explain why nouns are important. Now, we can go deeper into plural and singular nouns (for example).
WRITING
Our quest to learn more about weather tools, weather patterns, and more, has led us to the internet. Curiosity has been peaked and your child has been researching to find the answers to their questions. We are emphasizing note taking as we conduct short research projects. We want Community Three Learners to learn how to take good notes. We want your child to be able to take notes in their own words, notes that are understandable to them.
LITERACY
Asking and answering questions while we read is very important. Good readers ask meaningful questions as they read and look back to find the answer. We are working on asking questions as we read and finding the answer within the text. This is a fun skill to model for your child as they read at night.
We are reading ALOT of GREAT information as we investigate weather. Finding the main idea and details of informational text is an important life skill. Talk with your child about how you use this skill in your daily life. Also point our vocabulary as you read informational text.
As we research for weather, we are encouraging your child to navigate the web more effectively. We are teaching your child how to find relevant information by utilizing hyperlinks, sidebars, key words, and text features.
During our Genius Hour introduction, your child was introduced to literal and nonliteral language as well as how illustrations help the author tell their story. See more about Genius Hour below!
FRACTIONS
This week we will continue working on equivalent fractions, whole numbers written as fractions, and comparing fractions. We will be assessing on different parts of this standard. There are lots of ways to express the same number, especially when it comes to fractions.
Identifying and generating equivalent fractions is key to the conceptual development of
learners' understanding of fractions. Whole numbers can also be represented as fractions. Learners are responsible for writing whole numbers. Following are examples: 2/1, 6/3, 5/5. Essential vocabulary for this standard includes: equivalent fraction, unit fraction, greater than, and less than.
Note: Grade 3 expectations in this domain are limited to fractions with denominators 2,
3, 4, 6, and 8.

Genius Hour
Did you know....
Genius Hour is a concept that is taken from Google's brilliant idea, and incorporated into the classroom.
Check out this resource:

Genius Hour projects are not "at home" projects. Your child will work on their Genius Hour project on Friday afternoons and any other time an opportunity arises.
Planning a project can be both exciting and daunting for children. We know that, so we have a plan! We are walking your child through their interests, step by step and showing them how to develop their interests into a project that is research based and interesting to them!
Please be patient with us. It will be a few weeks before projects are brought to fruition. The process matters as much as the end result. We are being very intentional about preparing you child for success. With that being said, we have talked about how some of the most famous inventors and innovators failed several times before they "soared".
In Community 3, we say that Genius's don't get "stuck"--they pause, reflect, make changes, analyze, and use new ideas to keep going.
Genius Hour Inspiration!
Ask your child about Cain who did not give up on his idea! He started a movement in school's every fall, The Cardboard Challenge.
We launched Genius Hour with the book below! If you are interested in adding to your home library, check out this link! The book below is included, as well as a few others to get your child to think and to celebrate success and failure as a learning experience.
