A NOTE FROM MR. NELSON
As we work to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff, we are continuing regular safety drills to continue to develop higher levels of building security. The school safety drills include the following as indicated in our District Crisis Response Guidelines and the Wisconsin State Statutes: fire, security, severe weather/tornado, and medical. Our goal is to continue to help all students, staff, and parents be and feel safe in our school.
During the month of January, we will be conducting our second lockdown drill and will send a parent communication the evening of the drill as a follow up. Our teachers have been informed to share pertinent procedures and expectations with their students prior to these drills. During the lockdown drill, an announcement will be made and students will remain in their classrooms with their doors shut and locked. We feel it is important for families to know we will continue to practice our social distancing during the time of the drill.
As a building during the first half of the year, we have conducted an evacuation drill, a lockdown drill, an emergency medical response drill, and monthly fire drills. We will be conducting the lockdown drill described above, as well as an additional emergency medical response drill, severe weather/tornado drill, and continued monthly fire drills. Again, our teachers have been informed to share pertinent procedures and expectations with their students.
As always, please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

CogAT TESTING PARENT NOTIFICATION
In February, we will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to all in-person 3rd-grade students and 4th-8th grade students who are new to the district. The CogAT is used as a screening tool for verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal abilities and is used as one aspect of gifted identification. If you would like more information on our Gifted and Talented program, please see the FPS Gifted Resource Guide.
Franklin Public Schools will not be offering an “at-home” testing option for the CogAT this year. All 3rd-grade virtual learners and 4th through 8th-grade virtual learners who are new to the district have the option of taking the test at the Franklin Public Schools Education & Community Center (District Office) at 8255 West Forest Hill Avenue on a date to be determined. The well-being of your child is our primary concern and we will institute a number of measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our facilities. If you would like your child to take the CogAT this year, please complete this form by January 17.
Virtual students who choose not to complete the CogAT this year will complete the CogAT when they resume in-person learning.

ATTENDANCE REMINDER
This year we started a new process of reporting ANY absence including leaving early and arriving late on a google form. HERE is the link to report absences.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Wisconsin weather is upon us! Please make sure your son/daughter is dressed appropriately for outdoor recess. Coats and hats are necessary for the impending cold weather. However, this being Wisconsin, it can become warm and sunny by noontime. Please remind your child if they choose to remove their jacket during recess they are to be tied around their waist and not left on the playground. The decision to have an outdoor or indoor recess is based on both the wind speed and temperature at 11:30 am. If it is an outside recess day, all students must go outdoors.
Clothing
All students are expected to go outside for recess whenever the wind chill is above 0 degrees. Please be sure your child is dressed for the weather. This includes a warm coat, mittens or gloves, hats, scarves, snow pants & boots when there is snow. Please write the students name on all items.
New this Year:
As you are aware, our recess looks different keeping classroom cohorts together in assigned areas throughout the playground. This includes three grassy areas that will become snow when the winter weather starts. This means ALL students will be expected to have boots and snow pants during the weeks they are assigned to the snowy areas.
