Washington Monument
The Washington Monument was built in 1884 and a monument to Washington was the first proposed in 1783. Continental Congress appropriated funds to erect a statue of the country's military commander.
The Tallest Masonry
The Washington Monument at just over 555 feet tall is the tallest masonry (stone) structure in the world. It is also one of the world's most popular tourist attractions. The marble walls at its base are 15 feet thick and 55 feet wide.
The 50 Flags Flying
Each of the 50 flags flying along the base represents one of the states in the Union. The huge monument was built to honor our nation's first president. Although it was originally planned in 1783, it took more than 100 years to complete.
