A note from the Black History Committee
Hello Quail Hollow Community,
Our Falcons had the opportunity to be immersed in African American culture on Friday, February 16th. We were captivated by a special step routine from two collegiate organizations, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. It was a pleasure to have the Bulls from Johnson C. Smith join us. Those performances were followed by amazing presentations by our very own students. Under the leadership of Mrs. Ballard, the audience was treated to a dance and recitation. Mr. Goodale kept the tempo going with nice pieces played by the jazz band. The beautiful melodies of Ms. Mobley and the chorus students were second to none. The program concluded with a spoken word and musical selection created and performed by two very special Falcons. We can not forget the delicious food Forest Hill Church provided for our guests. Lastly, but certainly not least a major thank you to the best master of ceremony the one and only Mr. Powell!
This program would not have been possible without the support of students, faculty, students from Johnson C. Smith, and Forest Hill Church. A good time was had by all, with many looking forward to next year.
Until next year,
The Black History Committee
(Mrs. Robinson, Ms. Harris, and Ms. Clawson)
Pi Day Celebration

8th Grade Science Fair
On Thursday, February 15th we held our annual school Science Fair. Students worked hard to research and develop some really creative experiments and projects! Are you curious to know which hand sanitizer works best to remove germs from your hands? Do you know what type of moisturizer does the best job moisturizing and lasts the longest? How about seeing the type of bacteria that secretly thrives in your bathroom? Do you think an adult could pass an 8th grade science test? These are a few things you could have found out from this year’s Science Fair! Though we had 105 student projects displayed, our Science Fair winners were:
Tie for 1st Place:
Anthony Hopkins | The Effects of Bacteria Growth on Bathroom Objects
Lorelai Kaminski | Battle of the Germ Busters
2nd Place:
Amor Nunez | The Doggy Effect – What Types of Smells Interest Different Dogs More?
3rd Place:
Kaitlyn Case | The Effects of Ingredients on a Cupcake’s Height
Honorable Mention:
Michtorie Medley | The Effects of Chemicals on Plant Growth and Development
William Turk | Can an Adult Pass an 8th Grade Science Test?
Thanks to all of our 8th graders who participated in the 2018 Science Fair!

QHMS Students play with SCDBA All-District Band
On January 26-27, four QHMS band students participated in the SCDBA All-District Band. Students from QHMS worked for four months to prepare the audition materials, and on January 6, competed against over 400 students from ten surrounding counties for their spot. Charlotte Tsui, Joseph Sinski, Ta’ron Williams, Leah Harris, Giovanna Figallo-Tubay, Stephanie Beach, Austin Newsome, Sophie McCollister, Breanna Copas, and Jordan Peterson auditioned. Charlotte Tsui, Jordan Peterson, and Joseph Sinski were selected to the Symphonic Band, and Sophie McCollister made the Concert Band. This is a high honor! We are so proud of our Falcons!

CMS NEWS & EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Cold and Flu Season is Here
The cold and flu season is here and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools would like to make families aware of the symptoms and how to prevent the spread of these illnesses.
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness. It can cause mild to severe symptoms, and at times can lead to death. Some people — such as the elderly, young children and people with certain health conditions — are at high risk for serious flu complications.
CMS does encourage families to have their children immunized against the flu. Although it does not eliminate the risk, the flu vaccine is the best way to protect against flu and can reduce symptoms.
To avoid giving the flu to others, stay home when you are sick, cough or sneeze into tissues and discard them properly, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an approved hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
Flu symptoms may include:
A 100 degree F or higher fever or feeling feverish (not everyone with the flu has a fever)
A cough and/or sore throat
A runny or stuffy nose
Headaches and/or body aches
Chills
Fatigue
Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children)
When a child is home with a fever or vomiting, families should wait 24 hours until the child is symptom free before going back to school.
Please, help CMS maintain a healthy education environment by helping to reduce exposure to the cold and flu.
