What have past participants said about this training?
My experience in the Abydos institute was life changing -- and yes, I am being that dramatic! The institute provided me with so many wonderful writing tools to take back into my classroom. I feel the most important takeaway from the course was that it ignited a love for writing in myself that has spilled into the way that I teach. I was reminded about why I wanted to teach writing with passion in the first place. Throughout this school year, my students have found their voices, their writing stamina has greatly increased, and their revising and editing skills have become more focused and intentional. I highly recommend this 12-day training to any educator. May the process be with you!

This year, Joelle [Abydos participant] went from being a good teacher to a great one. Such a shift could not have occurred without Joelle's willingness to learn and practice a new way of teaching. The profound power of writing is in the process -- a lesson she learned during the Abydos 12-Day Writing Institute.

One of my students looked up one day and said for all to hear, "I sure like your new way of teaching." What she didn't realize was my philosophy hasn't changed, but the lessons I learned during the Abydos Writing Institute provided me with concrete strategies to encourage my students to write and think critically in ways they had never done before, and I was enjoying the process right along with them.

I really enjoyed this training. English teachers are under the impression that we can teach writing with little or no formal training. But in reality, the writing instructions we are exposed to are usually formulaic and with little or no emphasis on the process. Most are focused on the product -- a complete essay, but writing is the hardest thing for all of us to do. It takes specialized training to teach teachers this specialized skill. We as teachers must be students of the process in order to teach the process properly; here is where Abydos enters and excels.
This is my second time to participate in the Abydos 12-Day Writing Institute. It was a game-changer when I first started teaching, and as a veteran, it renewed my zeal to help students think. If I can get them to think about the world around them, to notice it, and to ponder over it, I can help them articulate their own feelings about what they see. I can help them realize that their voice matters. The Abydos training empowers teachers to be able to teach a life skill. The ability to put on paper thoughts and feelings so that others understand you.
