Classroom Update
Mr. Sykes' 4th Grade
Halfway There...
Highlights From The Week(s)
It's hard to believe we are already at the midway point of our school year. We've had a busy couple of weeks since our last update. Here are some highlights:
- Learning several strategies for multi-digit multiplication
- Developing fluency through a reader's theater related to our study of Greek Mythology
- Learning about the geography, resources, history, and people of the Northeast region
- Meeting our goals related to the Northeast states, capitals, and abbreviations
- Developing thesis statements and finding supporting details for our opinion writing
- Examining point of view through our read aloud book, Wonder

Feed My Starving Children
Students will soon be going on a field trip to the Chanhassen Feed My Starving Children to pack food for malnourished children around the world. We are excited to forego a traditional Valentine's party with a service-based project that better fits Birchview’s core values. We look forward to how fun and fulfilling this time will be. We hope your students will feel the importance of their work here. We’ll be creating thousands of meals during their packing time! Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns about our trip.
Animal Awareness Week
Please click here for more details and a list of items that can be donated.
Snack Policy
Over the past few weeks, some students have begun to neglect our classroom snack policy. Please remember that we have several students in our classroom who have severe food allergies. For this reason, we will have a PEANUT/TREE NUT SENSITIVE CLASSROOM.
Even food items with trace amounts of peanuts/tree nuts, as well as those that have been made on equipment that processes peanuts/tree nuts could pose a risk to student's health. This information can be found on the ingredients list on every food item. If a label reads: “MAY CONTAIN PEANUTS”, please do not send it to school. Your attention to this important health matter is greatly appreciated!
STATES AND CAPITALS
Yesterday, the retakes of our Northeast States and Capitals Quiz were sent home. I was thrilled that everyone was able to improve upon their score! Even though we have concluded this unit of study, students are encouraged to review both the Midwest and Northeast Capitals as we work towards our end-of-year goal of learning about all 50 states. Please continue to use our quizlet page as a resource.
Recorder Time
In music class the 4th graders have already begun to prepare for the Recorder unit! This music unit is an important part of the music curriculum here at Birchview and throughout the Wayzata elementary schools. This is a very exciting opportunity for young musicians!
Recorder order forms were due this week. If you have yet to make arrangements for your student's recorder, please contact Mrs. Michelle Gehrz 763-745-5346.
Postcards Please!!!
Students were excited to receive several postcards over the past few weeks from different parts of the United States! We are gaining on our goal of receiving a postcard from all 50 states. You can help us continue working towards our goal! Please request that friends and family send us a postcard from their corner of the USA. Students should be able to suggest states that we are missing.
All you need to do is send them our address: A personal note is encouraged, but not required.
