Find Joy in The Ordinary

considering.
Although the Jong mother-daughter pair was interesting, the Hsu family pair seems to be the most intriguing to read next. The Hsu mother and daughter pair seems to be much more melodramatic and engrossing; an example being when An-mei's mother cuts out a piece of her flesh in an effort to save her grandmother. Also the lessons their stories teach, such as standing up for oneself and the ability to accomplish anything one sets their mind to are values everyone should read about.
quotes.
Throughout the stories by the Jong mother and daughter pair, one of the most poignant quotes was a promise Lindo made to herself on her wedding day when she vouched to "always remember (her) parents wishes, but (would) never forget (her)self" (Tan 58). This quote expresses the discovery of ones own identity and invisible strength which is so important for everyone to find within themselves. Also an extremely significant aspect the quote touches on is the lesson of balancing duty to one's parents and to oneself.
parables.
Out of the four parables in The Joy Luck Club, "Queen Mother of the Western Skies" surpasses all the others through the strong message which was portrayed. In this parable, the grandmother teaches her granddaughter the importance of wisdom and "'how to lose (her) innocence but not (her) hope. How to laugh forever'" (Tan 213). The grandmother shapes the idea that her granddaughter holds endless knowledge about life and how even though she is young, wisdom can still be found.
thematic paragraph
In The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan presents the idea that identity makes and builds us into stable human beings and how finding ones own personal identity is essential for character development. Lindo Jong demonstrates the power that ones identity holds, for when she finds her own identity she develops this overwhelming courage and inner voice which allows her to escape a loveless marriage. Lindo was unafraid and strong because she "could see what was inside (her)self" (Tan 59). Once someone can see themselves for who they really are, there is only room for improvement and even the impossible can be achieved. Someones personality is deeply driven by their sense of identity and there is a central importance placed on ones sense of individual self.
