Monday Morning Faith Assembly brought to us by 3K!
Evidence of Learning Portfolios & 3-Way Conferences
In preparation for our upcoming Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences, your child's Evidence of Learning Portfolio will be sent home this coming week. Many classrooms this year have moved to a digital format for their students' portfolios - this is a great time to visit their portfolio, too. We encourage you to celebrate your child's growth and success since September!
Your teachers will be hosting Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences on Wednesday, November 7th from 3:30 - 8:00 pm. As in the past, interviews will be booked online, please watch for a letter with all the booking details coming home early this week. We look forward to meeting with you.
Remembrance Day Celebration
We are extremely grateful for the dedication and sacrifice of many Canadians who have made and continue to make incredible sacrifices to ensure our freedom and safety today. In recognition and honor of these individuals, OLA would like to invite all families to join us as we celebrate Remembrance Day on November 9th at 11:00 am. If you or a family member are a current or past Service Member, we would like to invite you to join us and be a part of this assembly. Please contact Mrs. Weller at sandyw@eics.ab.ca or by calling 780-998-3716 if this is something you are able to do for our community. In addition, current students are encouraged to wear their uniforms of service (i.e. Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides etc.)
Power of Positivity
This past week we continued to learn more about how to increase our happiness levels:
We shared that when sunlight reaches our skin, we produce vitamin D which helps produce serotonin. This explains why being outdoors makes people happier.
Happiness levels have been shown to increase by doing random acts of kindness. We planned to do something nice for someone and to share our plan with a friend.
We enjoyed some jokes and humour - because laughing out loud increases our serotonin.

Catholic Education Sunday
Our faith community here in Fort Saskatchewan will be gathering on Sunday, November 4th at 9:00 am to celebrate the gift of Catholic education in our province. We invite you to join the students and staff from St. John XXIII and OLA Schools as we pray for the gift of Catholic Education in the Province of Alberta. As we plan this gathering, we are in need of Altar Servers and Eucharistic Ministers. If you can help out, please email Mrs. Weller at sandyw@eics.ab.ca or call 780-217-2318.
Timely Topic: Catholic Education
Ever wonder why we have two school systems in Alberta? Why does the Catholic Church seem to have “pride of place” among other Christian and non-Christian faith groups? How is Catholic education different from that in the public school system? Why should we care?
You are invited to join the panel of experts on Monday, November 5 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at OLPH Parish in Sherwood Park to learn more about Catholic education in the Province of Alberta and what you can do to preserve it for future generations.
Panelists:
Archbishop Richard Smith, Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton
Dean Sarnecki, Executive Director, Alberta Catholic Schools Trustees Association (ACSTA)
Anna Laparco, Partner, Dentons Canada LLP, legal counsel to ACSTA
Paul Corrigan, Assistant Superintendent & Division Principal of Faith and Wellness at EICS
Successful First OLA Halloween and Family Dance
OLA's Halloween Celebrations
Classes will begin to organize for their class parties right after lunch recess, and get into their costumes. At 1:20 pm we will come together as an OLA community for a dance party and costume celebration until 1:50 pm. The students will then head outside for their recess as fresh air is important for their healthy growth, and return to celebrate in their classrooms.
Thank you for reminding your children that weapons as part of costumes will remain at home, or attached to costumes so they are not removable. Let's keep our school safe and caring.
Parents may be asked to help bring snacks for the in-class celebrations and we thank you in advance for honouring our AP 168: EICS Nutrition Policy by bringing healthy snacks for the celebrations. Candies brought to school will be respectfully returned home.

Boston Pizza's Operation Education
OLA School Council has partnered with BP's Operation Education to help raise funds to support the many programs offered by our OLA SC. The OLA SC will receive 5% back on all Boston Pizza receipts collected from September 1st - December 31, 2018. Please ask your friends and family to save their receipts, too - they can be dropped off at the school office anytime.
And, a quick reminder to save your bottles and cans - your OLA SC is planning a bottle drive.
Fort Schools Playgrounds- We need your help!
So, what do we need?
- Quorum - enough members of our 4 school communities to vote on decisions
- An executive (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) to formalize decisions about the funds and decisions
- Volunteers to help at one large silent auction fundraising event (the one and only fundraising event for the playgrounds)
- Community partner organizations to volunteer time and equipment when the time comes to install the playgrounds.
Please join us at the meeting on the 26th to find out more and help us make decisions!

Sneak Attack Atomic Volleyball
Not that we need to think about this now....because the weather is going to remain beautiful...right?
We are inviting families to donate any extra gently used winter clothing with OLA for when children forget particular winter clothing pieces. These can then be provided for the children's recess enjoyment.:-) Thank you in advance for your help as this expands the reaches of OLA's caring corner.

Upcoming Projects - Parents Invited
We are looking to kick-off the following projects and would love parental involvement:
- Cleaning up and setting up an outdoor classroom space in OLA's courtyard, including the building of/getting outdoor seating
- Learning about, completing and applying for grants for technology (ie. interactive boards in classrooms) and for outdoor classroom spaces
- Installing a "Buddy Bench" near our park, which requires some cement work
- Furniture building or collecting (pews or benches) for the chapel
We look forward to working with you on these projects to enhance OLA and bring even more beautiful learning experiences to OLA's students.
We are especially excited that we have several elements for our chapel making their way to OLA, and one includes a beautiful wooden altar from St. Patrick's Parish in Edmonton!
