SEM Elementary Coach's Corner

October 19-23

Last week at a glance

Great learning going on this week! I got to visit Kindergarten and watch them plant their pumpkin seeds, see 1st grade work on bridging to ten and building reading stamina, and 2nd graders discuss what they knew about a problem before beginning to solve. Thank you to Mrs. Shedd, Mrs. Henderson, Mrs. Feliciano and Mrs. Sitzman for welcoming me into your room. I so enjoy watching the little ones learn and grow! Ya'll are amazing!

* Stemscopes - Don't forget to utilize this amazing resource! It is also a great way to combine non-fiction reading with science concepts. There are great videos, quizzes, games, songs and more for each TEKS. You can also assign activities for your students to do at home or reserve computer lab time. There is a link to stemscopes on every science 5E lesson. Your user name is your last name, first initial and your password is science. Please let me know if I can help you incorporate stemscopes into your science instruction.

Math

Exemplars:

I received some awesome resources for extending the problem solving past the first 5 weeks. There is no right or wrong "next steps" but I below are some things I thought looked pretty cool! Remember, some teams, at Sem and other schools, are choosing to go back to the beginning and repeat weeks 1-5 now that we have new resources. Every team is in a different place so congratulate your self on getting started! :)

1. Students can use the questioning stems to facilitate discussions with partners. Perhaps you could create bookmarks of the questioning stems.

Click here for an example of communication questioning stems

2. Have students take a novice paper and edit/revise it to make it apprentice or higher.

3. Create groups and have each group do an exemplar focusing on a different process standard. When the groups are finished, have them do a gallery walk evaluating and tweaking each group to make it better.

4. Problem solving choice board. You could do a couple of squares together, then put it into a station to complete.

If you have any other great ideas, please share! I may have a prize for you!

Other info:

* PreK and Kinder Job Embedded PD-date change to Nov. 10 due to schedule conflicts.

* Modified Math CBAs are located under Special Education folder on Forethought. Modified scantrons are separate from regular CBAs.

* Kinder and 1st grade Academic Report Cards have been revised under a new format that does not allow to shade out nine weeks columns for specific standards; therefore, if the student has not learned the concept yet then mark "Developing".
