2016 OLA Annual Conference

Reflections from Kelsey Gourd

Experience as the Program Chair

I've always considered myself exceptionally organized, so when asked to be the organizer of such a big event I thought why not? Little did I know, this task was not just putting together a schedule. By researching other state and national conferences, I was able to bring innovative and creative ideas to the Oklahoma Library Association's Annual Conference. With the support of Calypso Gilstrap, OLA President, registration numbers increased, incredible guest speakers attended, and everyone complained about having too many session choices!

Attended as a Learner

One of my main goals for my school library program is to focus on creating a reading community. Keeping that in mind, I attended sessions that mirror my focus topic. Here are some of the sessions I attended:

  • Hosting a Family Read-In Event- How to celebrate reading with reading!
  • 101 Ways to Promote Reading in Your School Library- So many ideas that are easy to implement!
  • Writing Traits as Easy as ABC- How to integrate writing into everything!
  • Building a Reading Community- Again, so many ideas to implement!

Attended as a Leader

This year, I am the chair-elect for the Oklahoma School Librarians Division of OLA. I am so thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with the current chair about what direction to take OKSL in the future. From our collaboration, we were able to lead a positive and productive business meeting. My platform for next year within OKSL will be to create and manage a professional development network via social media platforms for school librarians in Oklahoma. I cannot wait to get started!
