Newsletter Week 4 Term 2
Sacred Heart School Petone Wednesday 25th May 2022
Principal's Pen
Talofa lava Parents and friends,
Week 4 of the term and a very busy week at school! We have welcomed back most of our Covid patients and it's great to have most children back at school. Please remember to keep your children home if they are sick.
We had a great Gold Reward Day at Avalon Park on the 12th May. The children were wonderful ambassadors for our school and really showed the RISE Values.
Kakapo class are at camp in Kaitoke and are due back today. They have been very lucky with the weather. Thanks to the parents and teachers who have made this camp possible. It's great to finally have seen the class head off to camp despite the cancellations and re-bookings due to Covid.
Congratulations to all those students who represented our school at the SWZ Cross Country yesterday. Congratulations also to those students who will now go on to represent our zone at the Interzone Cross Country. We are still waiting for the official confirmation of results.
Next week is Samoan Language Week and we look forward to our Samoan students leading us with their language and culture over the week.
We offer our prayers and sympathy to Cathy and Dion Criscillo and family on the recent death of Cathy's Dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Our apologies for inadvertently missing this bereavement from the last newsletter.
We are farewelling Cathy Smith as a Teacher Aide next Thursday. We thank Cathy for all she has done for the students she has worked with and wish her well in her new position.
Jackets:
We would like to clarify the school rules about jackets eg puffer jackets. Students are allowed to wear jackets but not instead of school jerseys or vests. They can be worn over the top of jerseys and vests to add an extra layer of warmth. We suggest that students keep a waterproof jacket in their bags or wear them to school on wet days.
Absences and Lateness:
We are becoming very concerned with how many children are coming late to school. This means that they often miss out on the important start of the day information and cumulatively they are actually missing alot of time. We are monitoring lateness and student absence and if we become concerned we will be contacting you. Unless your child is sick or a household contact, they need to come to school every day. We are part of a Truancy initiative in the Hutt Valley which is funded by the Ministry of Education and this term we will be focusing more closely on the attendance of our learners.
We are very aware that COVID has created a disruption for our students and their learning and want to ensure that we make sure that whanau have support if they are struggling to get their children to school.
Please do not be offended if we contact you about your child’s attendance at school or lateness to school. We are here to help as best we can and have access to additional support if needed.
If your child is not wanting to come to school for any reason, please ensure that you contact us as we really want to help out where possible.
Teacher Only Day:
Friday 3rd June is a Teacher Only Day. Please make alternative arrangements for your children on that day.
Winter Uniform:
Thanks to everyone for ensuring your children are wearing winter uniform. Please make sure that they only wear sports shoes with their PE uniform. School shoes must be black leather shoes with the correct tights or socks.
Board Elections:
This year we will be holding our triennial Board elections. The election date is September 7th. Keep watching the newsletter for more information about the elections.
College Enrolments:
This is the time of year that Colleges are starting their enrolment processes. Please check with the College to see what their enrolment requirements are and when enrolments close
Reminders:
- Please let the school know if your child is going to be absent before 9am if possible. This is a safety issue as we need to know where all the children are by 9.15am. We also need a reason for their absence.

Yummy Stickers
We had a wild spring storm hit us in Hawkes Bay, damaging a significant amount of our apple crop with hail. Although these look funny, they still taste yummy. The official cut-out is not on these bags, but you can collect the round bar-code sticker as 10 points. These are Yummy apples but branded Hailstone Heroes and available in both New World and Pak’n Save.
