Mission & Vision
Vision: Support new teachers by providing a structured, systematic, and sustained induction process to grow effective educators and increase student learning.

Objectives
- Teachers new to the district will understand the policies and procedures of our district.
- Teachers new to the district will understand building procedures.
- Teachers new to the district will receive the support and encouragement necessary for professional growth.
Overview and Introduction to the Mentoring Program
- workshop sessions specifically developed for Chillicothe R-II new teachers.

5.1 Classroom Management Techniques
- The developing teacher uses effective classroom management techniques including addressing misbehavior promptly and effectively with the least disruption of instruction.
5.2 Management of Time, Space, Transitions, and Activities
- The developing teacher effectively manages time, space, transitions, and activities to create an environment that enhances student engagement.
5.3 Developing Relationships with Students and Parents (Embedded 6.1 & 6.2)
- The developing teacher develops a positive culture in the classroom and school to positively affect student relationships and learning.

4.1 Using Instructional Strategies Leading to Student Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
- The developing teacher assures student growth with frequent instructional opportunities for students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
4.2 Using Appropriate Instructional Resources to Enhance Student Learning
- The developing teacher purposefully selects and uses a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional resources to enhance academic performance and technological literacy.
- (Embedded 1.2) The developing teacher uses a variety of differentiated instructional strategies, which purposefully engages students in content.
6.4 Using Technology and Communication Tools to Enhance Student Learning
- The developing teacher implements instruction that encourages technology and media communication tools use for learning and models those techniques.

The Mentor's Role at a Glance
Your mentor teacher will play a critical role this year as a consultant, collaborator, and facilitator. Your mentor will offer support and provide resources, encourage growth, and facilitate your professional vision. Below are just a few of the tasks your mentor will assist you with throughout the school year.
- Model good teaching practices
- Observe the new teacher teaching
- Offer suggestions for improvement
- Assist in lesson preparation
- Assist the new teacher in learning and understanding district and building policies and procedures
- Offer suggestions for developing relationships with administrators, students, colleagues, parents, and members of the community
- Provide praise and encouragement
- Establish a confidential professional relationship
- Assist in getting needed materials
- Work with the new teacher to address classroom management issues
- Introduce the new teacher to educational resources
- Introduce the new teacher to colleagues
- Foster a collaborative work environment

About the Chillicothe R-II District Mentoring Coach
Dr. Jill Watkins began her tenure in education in 1996. Throughout her career, Dr. Watkins has been a middle school and high school English Language Arts teacher, a secondary-level instructional coach, a secondary-level blended learning coach, a district-level Instructional Technology Facilitator, a college-level instructor, and a middle-level assistant principal. Dr. Watkins currently fills multiple roles in the Chillicothe R-II School District. Dr. Watkins is the high-school instructional coach. She also teaches dual credit College Composition and Research and ACT Prep. In addition, she serves as the District Mentoring Coach for all first and second-year teachers as well as new teachers to the Chillicothe R-II School District, the District's Professional Development Committee chair, the English Language Arts Department chair, and the Senior Class sponsor. In addition to her roles at Chillicothe R-II, Dr. Watkins is a college adjunct instructor for English 101 and English 102 through North Central Missouri College and serves as a dissertation editor for doctoral students enrolled in various universities across the nation.
Dr. Watkins is an avid reader, runner, and cyclist, and she enjoys spending time with her husband Wes and two dachshunds Pippa and Elsa.
Dr. Watkins earned a Bachelor of Science in English/Education from Missouri Western State University, a Masters of Education in Secondary Leadership and Administration from Northwest Missouri State University, an Educational Specialist in Superintendency from Northwest Missouri State University, and a Doctorate in Education from William Woods University.
