Butterfly Release
Preschool, Kindergarten and First grade released their butterflies on Friday, April 12th. Before releasing their butterflies, Mrs. Simon read "An American Indian Legend," then together the classes recited the poem by Kathryn Poland, "Messenger of God." As the butterflies were being released, Mr. Simon and Sister Otelia sang "Take the Word of God With You as You Go."
"An American Indian Legend"
According to An American Indian Legend: If anyone desires a wish to come true, they must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly cannot reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all.
In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish.
So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and be granted.
"Messenger of God"
Oh, Little Butterfly,
Messenger of God,
When I see you in the sky
I cannot help but nod.
You bring me respite
From grief and despair
Everytime I see you
Sailing through the air.
You renew my faith
In all God's wondrous plan,
And I know it's all in FAITH
Not in what I understand.
