A Message from the Principal
Thursday, December 8th, 2022
Dear Hemenway Community,
Are you still buzzing about the amazing performance of Beauty and the Beast? I sure am. Our scholars, performers, STARS certainly stole the stage this weekend with their incredible performance. The roles were cast in such a way that they personified the characters so well. We do hope you got a chance to see it! Calling all fourth graders...you will make your debut next year! We are looking forward to it.
Today, Thursday, December 8th is an early release. Dismissal begins at 1:05 pm.
Please check the schedule below for upcoming events.
Safety: We recognize the challenges experienced during pick-up as a result of our limited parking. With that being said, please be mindful of our neighbors, businesses and residences. We ask that you follow the road signs, especially on the side streets. Families have called with safety concerns that vehicles are being parked on both sides of roads which create a visual obstruction for students walking and crossing over to other streets.
We apologize for any inconvenience, however, I know we are all together in that we want to create the safest dismissal process possible.
Thank you to everyone and wishing you the best,
Miss O'Brien and Mrs. Napierski
Building Thinking Classrooms
Many teachers within Hemenway Elementary School and across the district have incorporated more problem based learning into their math classrooms this school year. This shift has been made to increase student curiosity, engagement and overall ability to problem solve within the math classroom.
How does this look different?
Fewer worksheets, quizzes and assessments. Instead teachers spend more time talking with students about strategies, models and their thinking.
Students will spend more time standing and collaborating with classmates.
Teachers are intentionally focusing on both content standards and the standards for mathematical practice simultaneously
How can you help?
Use positive words when talking about math at home
Point out math whenever you can! (grocery store, while driving or riding a bus, cooking, using a clock)
Encourage students to continue thinking and don’t just give them the answer. Some ways to do this could be saying “Can you show me how you did that?” or “Why do you think that worked?”.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to our Math Coach, Katie O’Neil at kmcgrath1@framingham.k12.ma.us.
November 29th is Picture RETAKE Day!
If you have missed picture day or you are not completely satisfied with your child's student portrait and would like another try, you have an opportunity for a retake on November 29th.
Please return the undamaged portrait package to the photographer on Retake Day. If you have any specific instructions to the photographer please jot them down so they show through the envelope window and can be spotted easily.

Dear Families,
Dear Families,
The character trait of the month for December is “Cooperation”. We have defined cooperation as getting along with others and working hard to accomplish a goal. This month students will participate in morning meetings, focused read-alouds, and social-emotional learning blocks in their classrooms where they will learn new strategies to help them work cooperatively with one another. They will learn how to work together by sharing their ideas, listening to others ideas, and compromising to achieve a common goal. Cooperation is a skill students can utilize in all areas of their lives - with friends, members of their class, the larger school setting, family and the community at large. Families are invited to practice cooperative problem solving at home to further enhance the skills learned at school.
