Everyday Heroes - September 11

Twenty years ago tomorrow, the tragic events of 9-11 impacted our nation and our lives forever. For the children of Nixon School, there are varied levels of awareness to these historcial events; however, it is on this anniversary that our students can take time to remember and honor in a developmentally appropriate manner the everyday heroes of September 11, 2001, as well as the everyday heroes in their lives today. In an effort to do just this, the following message was shared during our Morning Annoucements today...

"So often when people think of what a hero is, they think of characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, or even Superman. But a hero doesn’t have to be one of the many characters that we see in movies or in cartoons.

An Everyday Hero is someone who makes a difference in the life of a person.

An Everyday Hero is someone who can be counted on and who is respected.

An Everyday Hero is someone who is trustworthy and responsible.

An Everyday Hero is there for you when you need help.

Everyday Heroes make a difference because they care.

On September 11, 2001, we as a nation discovered many Everyday Heroes and because of this tomorrow is known as Patriot Day. Tomorrow is a day to remember all of those hereos, as well as the Everyday Heroes that make a difference in our lives. Let us have a moment of silence, where each of us thinks of an Everyday Hero that has helped us.

Now please stand as we sing the National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, in honor of those Everyday Heroes.

Remember, anyone can do something to fill another person’s bucket and as a result, anyone can be an Everyday Hero… that means you too have the power to be an everyday hero. See being an everyday hero is as simple as being the best bucketfiller you can be and making the choice to do something that can help others and make the world a better place. So in honor of all the heroes that helped others on September 11th, 2001, make the choice to do something for others day… make yourself proud!"

Chromebooks

Please keep in mind... every Grade 2-4 student should be brining their Chromebook and charger back and forth to school each day. This is an essential learning tool and in turn, it is needed every day! If your child's Chromebook is not working, cracked, missing a charger, etc, please be sure to complete a Tech Service Request, which can be found on this link.

Fire Drill

This week we completed our State mandated Fire Drill for the month of September. We were fortunate in that one of our district's Security Guards observed our fire drill. All students and staff participated in the drill and they are complimented for following directions and implementing our security protocols.

A La Carte Items (Snacks) in the Cafe

While breakfast and lunch meals continue to be free through June, Maschio's has re-opened the snack counter. Snacks, which include but are not limited to chips, ice cream, cookies, etc, are now available for purchase. Students can utilize cash or money on their My School Bucks card to purchase these items. This is NOT required and is simply offered as an option to all students.

Dismissal -We Are Rocking and Rolling!

We have come SOOOO far since last week. Today we had all buses boarded and departing by 3:38 PM :). Thank you for your support as we invested time early on to make sure that everyone was dismissed to the right bus and in turn the right bus stop. Please keep in mind that an adult MUST be at the bus stop to receive our Kindergarteners.

Birthdays in School

Birthdays are a special and exciting time! I would kindly ask that all Nixon School families keep in mind the following information regarding school celebrations, which can also be found in the Code of Conduct.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and support as we strive to ensure that our students enjoy their special day, while maintaining the overall safety and well being of our school community.

SCHOOL CELEBRATION PROCEDURES

Roxbury’s elementary schools will continue to have FOOD-FREE birthday celebrations and seasonal classroom parties. Thank you for your cooperation. For all birthdays, summer birthdays included, students will have an opportunity to select a book to keep from our Birthday Book Collection. Students are not permitted to distribute goody bags.

Party invitations are not permitted to be handed out at school. Families who choose to participate in the PTA will have access to a PTA sponsored site, where families can opt to have their contact information listed and used for communication related to outside school events (i.e. birthday parties, seasonal parties, playdates, etc).

Nurse's Notes

We are asking everyone to do their part in helping to keep our school community healthy. As a result, if your child has a fever, (productive) cough, or runny nose, please keep them home until they feel better. Please do not provide your child with fever reducing medication in hopes that they can make it through the day.

Also, pllease remember to have ....

  1. Clean, extra masks in your child's backpack.
  2. A Water bottle and snack.
  3. Your child wear appropriate (closed back and rubber soled) shoes so that they can safely enjoy Physical Education class and recess.

Check-In Usage

Last week, our Family Check-In had over 350 views! I am thrilled to know that so many of our families are reviewing the information in the weekly check-ins and using it to foster the partnership that we have in the children's educational experience.

Know Someone at NES Who Has Filled a Bucket? Fill Out our Bucket Filler Form and we will recognize that individual (student or staff member) during Morning Announcements.
