Interested in Volunteering at Claxton?
Please email clxvols@gmail.com if you have any questions about completing this form or if you'd like to discuss volunteering at Claxton.
To volunteer in most roles at Claxton, you will need to have an approved background check annually through Asheville City Schools. It takes about 5 minutes for you to start the process but sometimes it takes a couple of weeks for the check to be approved, so we encourage you to click here to start the background check as soon as possible.--https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/
In order to work with or spend time one-on-one with students, volunteers also need to select a time to attend one brief (~20 min.) Asheville City Schools LEVEL II TRAINING SESSION that is focused on the safety of our students. Please check back here in our weekly Buzz newsletter for future training session dates or email clxvols@gmail.com if you have questions. Level II Volunteer training sessions are scheduled to be held this fall in the Board Room at ACS' Central Office at 85 Mountain St. in downtown Asheville on:
- Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at 1:00 PM
- Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at 12:00 PM
- Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at 12:00 PM
- Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at 12:00 PM

A Note from Mr. Ackerman
Hello Claxton Families!
My name is Mark Ackerman and I am the school counselor. This year our school will be focusing on more social/emotional learning in the classroom. We will also have a character trait that students will practice and build on each month. For the month of September, students will begin focusing in their classrooms on The Leader in Me and the 7 Habits. Then, for the month of October, we will be learning about courage. In November we will learn about loyalty.
I wanted ask if you could check your home libraries. Maybe you have a copy of some books that I need for our weekly lessons. If you have a copy, I would be very grateful if you would allow us to borrow the book. I promise to take really good care of it. Here are some of the books that I am looking for:
Flower Girl Butterflies by Elizabeth Howard
Margaret and Margarita by Lynn Reiser
Miss Tizzy by Libba Gray
Con Mi Hermano/With My Brother by Eileen Roe
Dogger by Shirley Hughes
The Boy Who Held Back the Sea by Lenny Hurt
The Cello of Mr. O by Jane Culter
Wilma Unlimited by Kathleen Krull
Thank you! I am looking forward to a fabulous school year.
You're Invited to Claxton's Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Meetings!
Once a month the Claxton PTO meets in the Claxton media center to review the status and progress of initiatives the PTO supports and manages, and to hear updates from Claxton staff. These meetings are open to ALL and attending is a great way to learn about PTO activities, school updates and whether you would be interested in taking on a role within the PTO. This year we’re trying a new approach. The first 30 minutes (6pm-6:30pm) will be when we “conduct business,” such as reporting on budget and upcoming event needs (for example, our upcoming Fun Run and Fall Carnival). The second 30 minutes (6:30pm-7pm) will be dedicated to updates provided by Principal Edwards and teachers, as well as time for Open Comment should anyone want to ask questions and / or voice ideas. Everyone is welcome to attend the full hour, but for those looking to only hear from school staff and participate in Open Comment, this gives 30 minutes back to busy schedules. Below are upcoming meeting dates. We’d love to see your face! If you have any questions, please email clxparents@gmail.com.

Seussical Jr. the Musical
Announcing Claxton's School Musical!! Seussical Jr. will appear onstage at Claxton with performances November 16th-18th! That's right--Claxton's musical is happening in the fall and not in the spring this school year. Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical Jr., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony award winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! Auditions are open to all 4th and 5th grade students. All students who audition and attend rehearsals will be in the Seussical Jr. cast and crew. Ms. Rigsby and Mr. Butler will use auditions to help in assigning parts and creating ensemble groups. Auditions will be held on September 13th and 14th. The participation fee is $50.00 per student. Scholarships are available upon request. Please make your payment online. The registration form can be downloaded here.

Be a part of the Claxton DIRECTORY!
Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) subscribes to the MySchoolAnywhere service for our family and faculty directory and email communications. It's secure, easy to use, and free to all Claxton families.
The directory portion can help parents in need of homework assistance, setting up play dates with new friends and many other social needs.
If you haven't registered, please go to the site below, enter our school's code and follow the steps to register your family. You can specify what information you'd like to appear in the directory - or choose not to appear at all.
Returning Families - If you're already registered, you should have received an email recently asking you to update your family information and display preferences for the new school year. You do not need to register again unless you did not receive that email.
Register at https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/new-family.a5w?fam=ClaxtonElementary132090
Once we've had a chance to verify your family information, you'll receive an email with login credentials and instructions to access the system.
