A Word from the Principal… December 2, 2021

It is hard to believe that it is already December! To prepare for winter weather emergency closures, please make sure to sign up for FlashAlert on the Gresham-Barlow School District to receive any emergency closures or schedule change notifications.

We have been working hard to support our students to build positive relationships. This week, our PE teacher Mr. Kopra and our TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) Mrs. Campbell led lessons reteaching recess and playground expectations as well as taught students to play Shooting Stars and Hoop Tag. We will continue to look for ways to support students to practice both free and structured play.

Safety Update: Hollydale staff have noticed an increase in students wearing Heelys Skate Shoes. Due to safety concerns with these shoes, we are asking students to either remove the wheel from the shoe or wear other shoes to school. We have already had several accidents and want to do everything we can to keep students safe.

Hollydale has a long-standing policy that no toys from home are to be brought to school. The one exception to this is if a particular teacher is using Pop-Its in their classroom and has communicated that to families, the student in that class may bring one to school. However, if the Pop-It is being misused or is causing a distraction, staff will ask the student to store it in their backpack until the end of the day. At no time are the Pop-Its allowed out on recess.

December Character Trait - Generosity

This month we are learning about the character trait of generosity. Students will be learning what it means to be generous and how we can show generosity to others. During our last week of school (Dec 13-17) before Winter Break, students will attend our monthly assembly where teachers will award a few students a Hero Award for showing generosity here at school.

At school generosity can be seen in small ways and in big ways. It might mean being generous with our time, and helping others with an assignment or task, it could also look like sharing supplies or equipment at recess. We can also show generosity with our words by giving someone a compliment or encouragement. We're excited here at Hollydale to be on the lookout for all the generous actions students will do this month!

Covid Vaccines

If your child has received a Covid vaccine please email Megan Clohessy at clohessy@gresham.k12.or.us so we can update our records.

If you have any questions please call the office at 503-661-6226.

Volunteers

As of December 6, 2021 volunteers are now allowed back at Hollydale! In order to be able to volunteer, you must have a completed background check. If you are interested in volunteering please complete the district volunteer application at https://www.gresham.k12.or.us/Page/62. The volunteer status of those who were cleared pre-COVID, has expired and you will need to submit a new application. Please be aware that due to the volume of applications, it may take 2-3 weeks (possibly longer) for your application to be processed and approved. Once a volunteer is approved, our office will need to verify vaccination status by seeing a card or picture of the card, prior to volunteering.

We are seeking district-approved volunteers to assist with recess activities for all grade levels! Lunch recess begins at 11:00 am and the last one ends at 1:00pm. If you have completed your district volunteer paperwork and background check please contact us for more information by calling the office at 503-661-6226 or emailing our principal.

Masks at recess

Following Governor Brown's guidance, the district has changed the outdoor mask policy. Please discuss with your student(s) whether you would like them to wear a mask at recess or not or if you are comfortable with them being mask-free outdoors.

We do ask that parents wear masks as often as possible when around students outdoors.

Masks remain mandatory indoors.
