ORS Coordinated School Health News

May 2021

Meet your New Nursing Coordinator!

Hello! My name is Madison Branham, and I am so grateful to begin my journey with Oak Ridge Schools. I have been a school nurse for the past 3 years in Anderson County and prior to that I worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at East TN Children's Hospital. I am also in the process of gaining my Doctorate in Pediatric Nurse Practice with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in order to better serve students daily. My husband and I reside in Anderson County and enjoy spending down time on Norris Lake, at church, and coaching our soccer team. I look forward to ensuring the health needs of children in the system are met through safe, evidence-based nursing care. If you need to reach me, feel free to email me at mgbranham@ortn.edu or call 865-425-9009.

New AEDs for the District

Did you know that sudden cardiac arrest is the #1 cause of death for high school student athletes? ⚾ Oak Ridge Schools is committed to doing our best to prevent this from happening to even one of our athletes. Four new AED's have been purchased to support our student athletes and provide better coverage for athletic events. One AED will be placed at the Baseball/Softball Complex, one at each middle school and an additional one at the high school to provide coverage when multiple sports are occurring on campus at different locations.

Thank you to the ORS administration for seeing this need and supporting the purchase.

The School Nursing Department's "Vaporize Vaping" grant was awarded and will allow us to add additional Vaping detectors in both middle schools and at the high school. These vaping detectors will be placed in various places throughout the buildings to help deter vaping in our schools.

Thank you Healthy School Teams!

Each school is required to have a Healthy School Team that meets periodically throughout the school year. This team is designed to focus on the health needs of the students and staff at the school.

As you finish up the your school year, take a moment to thank your Healthy School Team members. In an unprecedented year, these wonderful teachers and staff volunteered their time to invest in the health of the students and staff at their school.
