They have an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) that lets you access the needed state provided healthcare in Italy at a reduced cost and sometimes for free on a temporary stay. It also covers you for treatment for pre-existing medical conditions but it doesn't cover you if you’re trying to obtain medical treatment. Emergency treatment is free or at low cost to anyone in need in Italy.
