BMHS Weekly Update
December 2, 2019
Going Home at the End of the Day
Students are not permitted to stay in the building for an evening event (e.g., concert or games). They should leave and come back for the event at the appropriate start time.
Students will be asked to leave after 2:45 unless they are in the building for the reasons outlined above.
Department Highlights: English
The English Department has been busy implementing “Writing the Titan Way” into each class. The department has developed a common writing language for all students taking English classes at Berea-Midpark. Find our posters throughout the building that show what we’re doing!!
Ms. Papakonstantinou and Mrs. Ferguson have been working hard preparing students for the annual Shakespeare Competition sponsored by The English Speaking Union. The winner of the Shakespearean monologue contest will compete at the county competition at Shaker Heights High School in February. The top competitor receives a trip to New York City to recite their monologue in the national competition.
Mr. Peoples and Ms. Bartlett have the Speech and Debate Team ready for competition this year. Novices and experienced debaters will compete this year at numerous schools. Berea-Midpark will host TWO events this year! The first event is the fifteenth annual Grindstone Invitational Tournament. We will then play host to the Cleveland OSDA District Tournament which is a state qualifying event.
“The Nine Muses” is the “reinventing” of the Berea-Midpark literary magazine. Ms. Papakonstantinou will advise the group and oversee the submission of various forms of creative writing such as poetry, short stories, and original art. There will be a web site featuring the works which should be live by May. We are also hoping for a printed version as well.
English teachers have been incorporating the active reading strategy of “Marking the Text” into the reading curriculum. As a result, our students have become more connected to their reading and seem to enjoy the process.

Plastic Shopping Bags Needed
Key Club, at both BMHS and BMMS, are collecting plastic shopping bags of any shape, size, or color, even with holes in them. The bags are being used to make water-proof mats for the homeless. Please bring your bags to Ms. Lyon in Room 134 at the high school and Room 223 at the middle school. Thank you for your help in re-purposing plastic bags!
