Blue and White Spotlight
April Edition
Origins of April Fools day
For the past 4-5 centuries, people all over the world have celebrated what is now recognized as April fools day. The unofficial holiday’s exact origin is still unknown, but lots of theories exist as to where the original idea of April fools came from. Some historians have pointed to the change of the calendar in 1582 ordered by Pope Gregory XIII from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar as an explanation of where the holiday might have started. The former calendar’s new year was on April 1st and was widely observed in most cultures as the first day of the year even outside of Europe. The news that the calendar year was slow to travel and in some places didn’t change, so some people still celebrated the new year on April 1st, thus becoming known as “april fools”. Other people began to make fun of and try to trick the “April fools” with other practical jokes and fake stories. They’re some problems and holes in this story however, as the Gregorian calendar wasn’t adopted by England until the mid 1700’s but by then April fool’s was already celebrated in England and well known. Other theories exist, but it’s almost impossible to pinpoint exactly where it came from since the holiday is so widespread and nobody seems to have an idea where it started geographically. The holiday is celebrated widely throughout the western world, and differ slightly from place to place, but what is for sure is that the holiday is simply for fun and pranks everywhere that it is celebrated.
Easter
Easter is a holiday celebrated by many different people in many different countries every year. The origin of Easter is derived from Christians, it is a day that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead and it is a day celebrated because of it. Although not everyone who celebrates the holiday is Christian. Many parents every year tell their children the story of the “Easter Bunny” who comes the night before Easter and leaves candy and sometimes toys and other things for children. The origin of the Easter bunny began when German immigrants came to America and told of stories of the “Easter bunny” and left nests outside of their homes for the bunny to lay colorful eggs in. Over time it has spiraled from parents simply coloring eggs for their children, to them leaving them candy, gifts, or money. Some families still dye eggs to this day but many people celebrate in many different ways. Whether for religious purposes, or simply a day to celebrate be sure to enjoy this upcoming Easter!

Emergency preparedness is becoming more important every year in people’s lives, especially in the united states with increased weather changes, public safety issues, and other issues that cause us harm whether it’s intentionally or just a natural disaster. They’re 3 steps to becoming more prepared for these emergencies, starting with being informed and aware about the possible threats in your area. For people who live in the southeast region like most of us, the main natural disaster concern is tornadoes. For people who live closer to the coast, the highest concern would be hurricanes and flooding obviously. They’re also other emergencies that can occur such as house fires that can cause damage to property and personal harm. You should have a mapped out plan in place incase of a house fire for your family to get out and have a meeting place so that their is no confusion in case of this emergency. This is also an important step in being prepared for emergency and natural disasters. Having a plan in place can save lives and minimize confusion. You should also equip your home with the proper kit or equipment needed in times of emergency such as a fire extinguisher. You can find a list of steps and procedures at https://emergency.cdc.gov/preparedness/
Art Showcase
Phenomenal, Astonishing, Marvelous are just some of the words that were used to describe the art showcase. On Tuesday, April the 4th Cherryville High School had its annual art showcase which shows some of the scholar work our students are doing in the music and art department. At the art showcase there were performances by the band and the chorus. There was also a silent auction, food and a teacher's showcase corner. In preparation for the showcase our art teacher Mrs. Dellinger collected artwork from here first and second semester classes. The art club then put up all the artwork and ran the art show by painting faces and giving tours. We want to thank everyone that came out and supported our annual art show. Thank You.
