Exponent Laws

Morgan Harmon

Multiplying numbers with exponents

  1. Keep the bases the same
  2. Add the exponents
EX:

2^2 2^3= 2^2+3 =2^5

Exponents raised to a Exponent (power to a power)

  1. Keep the base the same
  2. multiply the exponents
EX:

(2^3)^2 = 2^3*2 = 2^6

Dividing numbers with exponents

  1. Keep the base the same
  2. Subtract the exponents
EX:

2^5/2^2= 2^5-2 = 2^3

Negative Exponents

  1. Keep base and exponent together
  2. Flip base to other side to find reciprocal
EX:

X^-4=1/x^4
