Westside Middle School
December 4, 2020
Important Dates to Remember:
Winter Break No School: December 21st- January 4th
Last day of Semester 1 - Friday, December 18th.
First day of Semester 2- Tuesday, January 5th
How to be a successful student!
- You must take your daily responsibilities seriously.
- Complete your assignments.
- You must understand that deadlines matter.
- Deadlines are there to minimize your homework (your at-home assignments are not homework), and it's important that you meet them as you go because assignments often builds on the previous assignment. (Think of it like baking a cake. If you miss the my-cake-is-cooked deadline, there won't be anything for you to do on decorative frosting day and even less on let's-eat-this-thing day.)
- You must advocate for yourself.
- If you do not understand what you're supposed to do, ask someone (teacher or a friend) to explain it.
- If you don't understand make sure you have watched the lesson videos then ask questions to clarify what you don't understand.
Here are a few suggestions for ways to make your at-home days more successful.
- Get up at the normal time every day.
- Get dressed, all the way to shoes.
- Have a dedicated work space.
- A desk or table that is only for work and is not your bed or a couch.
- Stock your work space with supplies.
- pencils, pens, markers, etc.
- paper: lined and not
- computer charger
- headphones for WebEx and for music while working
- snacks
- NO PHONE!
- Stay at your work space until your work for the day is complete.
- Follow your schedule: do period one work first then period two, etc.
- Take a short break between classes--no more than ten minutes.
- Set reminders for your required online meetings.
- Have Google Calendar send you an email or a notification.
- Set an actual clock alarm.
- Have Siri, Google Home, or Alexa remind you.
- Do not submit blank assignments on Google Classroom.
- Ensure that you have attached your work before you submit the assignment.

National Junior Honor Society
The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Westside Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Students in the second semester of seventh or eighth grade are eligible for membership. If students were inducted as a seventh grader, they will NOT need to reapply.
Those students who meet the scholarship criterion of a 3.8 on the 4.0 scale are invited to complete a Student Activity Information Form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. This will be sent out late January-early February. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is also required. Examples of leadership may happen within the school building (student council) or outside of the classroom (team captains, scouting honors, etc.). Service to the community is considered volunteering in a capacity that does not benefit the student (getting paid for a service or merely helping an extended family member) services considered would be volunteering at a non-profit organization (Film Streams, the zoo, Do Space, among many others). Service learning is not considered volunteering for a team activity to raise money for team expenses (car washes for a soccer team, selling concessions for a concert the student might participate in at a later time.) A student should have at least 5 hours of service learning when filling out the application.
Once again the Student Activity Information Form will be sent out in late January-early February.
